US Online Job Market declines 4.6% in December

Labor demand at the end of 2011 was back where the year began. In fact, it was 1.9% below last January’s average. What started in 2010 with plenty of optimism ended in a four months decline. In December, employers removed another 4.6% of their job openings compared to November. Nevertheless, the US economy had gained 1.45 million jobs last year by the end of November.

Looking forward there is optimism again. The Consumer Confidence Index, measured by theConference Board, was up 9.3 points at the end of December. Labor demand in January will show whether employers share this optimism.

For this report SkillPROOF estimates the counts of job openings. Estimates are calculated directly from SkillPROOF’s actual daily counts of job openings. As part of its calculations, SkillPROOF uses data and findings from reports of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) (http://www.bls.gov).
