Gerry Crispin and Mark Mehler of CareerXroads put out an Update newsletter that should be part of your regular recruting reads.

In the update that just hit my Inbox, G&M shared some ideas from their recent colloquium on how to salvage recruiting if you're feeling pressure to perform:

  • Reducing monetary Employee Referral awards or shifting [employee referrals] to non-monetary perks.
  • Taking a hard look at Job Board/Resume Database spending and [at least temporarily] reducing all costly recruiting initiatives that produce marginal returns. Stick to the efforts that get 80% of a job family's qualified candidates rather than the 50 things that get the last 20%.
  • Freezing-out 3rd party recruitment agencies as a [sources of hire]. "They are toast. It's us or them."
  • No F/T hires - only contingent or contract.
  • Recruiting tools are great but everyone does not have to have them. "What Toys can you do without?"
  • Create, improve and manage your recruitment branding campaign with internal resources.
  • Save talented recruiters by shifting them to outplacement, recruitment marketing, metrics, workforce planning or other areas of the Company

As if agencies didn't hate corporate recruiters enough!
