Being a smart Recruiter means bringing your special skills and attributes to the table and using them to their full advantage.

Some people in recruiting excel in sales. They enjoy calling candidates and convincing them to take a look at an opportunity. Other Recruiters are great at networking. Still others enjoy the thrill of the hunt and tracking down names on-line.

What makes anyone a smart Recruiter is using what they are best at and tailoring their recruiting techniques accordingly.

Being a smart Recruiter means learning about the industry you are recruiting in. For Generalists, this can be difficult. Just knowing a few catch phrases helps. Sometimes you will need your candidate to translate industry jargon, but I try to keep my mouth shut and look things up after the interview.

Being aware of how quickly things are changing in the recruiting field is crucial. Each day things change more and more quickly. Your old techniques become obsolete seemingly overnight. You need to know what to replace them with.

Networking and learning from other Recruiters helps me grow as a Recruiter. Be the one to reach out and offer something of value to someone else.

And, lastly, don't be afraid to help your candidates. We've all had candidates who talked too fast or too much, or peppered their conversations with too many ahs. You can coach them to improve how they present themselves. Just make sure you do it in a positive way. If you know the Hiring Manager is succinct, and your candidate rambles, let them know what to expect.
