What makes you more employable in 2010?
#3 Self Motivation / Organisational Skills
#10 Dependability / Reliability
#11 Political Awareness & Diplomacy
A critical component for the success in the job market is the art ofSelf promotion. If you are looking for a job then networking and technical expertise on their own are just not enough. You should be able to present your achievements in a light that makes you look better than your competitors.
There is a fine line between self promotion and bragging!
You should not boast about your achievements, as nobody likes a bragger. However, by following some simple steps you can promote yourself in a more effective manner.
The first thing that you should consider is your resume. Make sure that every line in your resume reflects your accomplishments. This gives the employer of an insight as to what you can acomplish and if they need more clarification will ask you at the time of your interview.
Combined with all the other traits that we have discussed in this series, the art of Self Promotion, is what will ultimately win you the role or not. We at SMStheJob believe that self promotion dignifies your achievements but it should never be obnoxious to others.
You should be aware of your qualities, especially those that make you unique and different from others. Be confident about your abilities and your work. Present your achievements in a straight forward manner. You can describe it in the following parts: give an example of the problem you faced, the action you took and the results you got.
Introverts generally face more problems during interviews to promote their achievements. “Self Promotion for Introverts: Get Heard More. Even If You Talk Less”, by Nancy Ancowitz is a brilliant article that provides some tips to enhance the self promotion skills.
Your last piece of homework for this series!
Follow the three characteristics of effective self promoters by Connie Kadansky in her article “Getting a Job is a Sales Job: Differentiating Yourself from the Other Job Seekers” and look at KateyShaw.com on the topic of “Successful Connections – Tip #1 Step Outside Your Comfort Zone.”
