Our continuing series on the rank and file and thought leaders who make us proud of our vocation. Meet my colleague, my fellow team partner at Palm Inc, Brendan "Some kind of super recruiter" Moran. (SKSR).

Brendan is a Staffing Specialist at Palm Inc. - a corporate leader in mobile computing specializes in the Treo Smartphone. He has over 10 years Industry experience in mobile computing, semiconductor, IT, Web, Product Marketing, and Finance, both internationally and domestically. He works with corporate executives, manages contractor resources, and has a particular set of expertise in the areas of full-cycle recruiting, passive candidate sourcing, immigration, employment law, applicant tracking, behavioral interviewing, negotiation, and closing of candidates. Brendan is currently a lead recruiter supporting Palm Labs, Product Marketing, and staffing our intern program, and previously oversaw staffing at Palm's Asian Design Centers. In addition, he likewise previously serviced Palm's Quality Partners group, which provides testing services for mobile wireless, client/server, and multimedia companies. The group specializes testing mobile wireless devices specifically Blackberry, Palm OS, Pocket PC, Win CE, and J2ME. Brendan helped them refine their recruiting process, educated staff on immigration issues, and hired both full-time engineers and contractors.

I work with, collaborate with, and crack whimsical jokes with Brendan on a daily basis you see, and it is in each instance that I can sincerely state, that I can affirm that I have found the best team partnering relationship in my career. Yes, Brendan exudes team collaboration, reviewing structure, processes, and inserts his command for detail, reviewing all factors that come into play to employ relevant resources to an effort, and helps navigate on behalf of any given project, and does so seamlessly and admirably. Brendan is modest and yet understands his capabilities, and the demand for them within corporate leadership - as a forceful instrument for 'getting the job done' and his affable sense of humor sets a tone for comradery and trust among his peers. He is forthright, as he is in "breaking the ice" to isolate a problem to find solutions, and he is technically inquisitive as to be apt to understand the inner workings of skill sets in relation to overseeing pipeline ramp-ups which support the broader technological retooling underway.

My friends, I am a big fan of Brendan Moran. Brendan is many things, and if you ask his team, and his management, - they are all matters of distinction, his work ethic a model for admiration, and a cause celeb in friendship and in his ability to inspire someone, like myself, to produce the best product not solely because it is your task, but because you owe it to Brendan to make your product shine in kind for his own efforts. Some may venture to call the ethos 'inspirational' - Brendan would shrug it off regardless, laugh and carry-on, ... "just doing my job." Today I call him on it all and shine light on the other half of the Moran recruiting dynasty cited last week. Brendan Moran you see, is husband to Tricia Moran; Wonder Twin powers activated and positioned for accolades far from the pages of sixdegrees to where they matter - the streets of innovation in Silicon Valley.

Q&A with Brendan Moran, Senior Recruiting Consultant

Six Degrees: Tell us of your home world Brendan.

BRENDAN: I’ve been married 4 years to Trish Palacios- Moran. Our kids are our two dogs, Hannah a cocker spaniel, and Sage a blond chow-chow. We adopted them both from friends that could not keep them and have thoroughly enjoyed them.

I collect VW toys from the 50’s and 60’s, I’m an avid mountain biker and have climbed most of the tallest accessible peaks in the Northwest. I also peddled my bike from Geneva Switzerland to Nice, France in 4 days traveling over some of the Tour de France peaks. I’m also passionate about snowboarding and have been engaged with it for over 20 years. I’m involved in Project Hired, mentoring people with disabilities in finding jobs. I also enjoy giving free career advice on “Yahoo Answers” and have a 30% best answer rating.

Six Degrees: How did you get started as a recruiter?

BRENDAN: I’ve been recruiting since 1997 and got started at an agency. I came from a company where I was the top inside sales person handling major accounts worldwide. It was the hardest 2 years of my life trying to get the agency system down. Was successful though. Went to a few more agencies, then got my first contract job at Sun Microsystems supporting 2 large engineer teams in the Microprocessor Division.

Six Degrees: What single event had the most impact on your sourcing/recruiting career?

BRENDAN: I went into recruiting because I thought I could make a successful career and also help people land their dream jobs. When I was in sales I loved “The Win”, but really wasn’t being fulfilled in my job. I wanted a job where I could build lasting relationships and also be rewarded for it. However, I soon found out that recruiting is a business, with a lot of stress. There were times however, when I received a gift basket for appreciation in finding a job for someone, or a young lady who was in tears because she landed her dream job, that made my job more rewarding. Since then, I’ve learned to balance the business aspect and the need to help people in their professional lives by volunteering.

Six Degrees: Detail your position, responsibilities, size of your staffing organization:

BRENDAN: Currently working at Palm, Inc. as a lead recruiter. Our staff is 5 technology recruiters, 1 college recruiter, 1 immigration/relocation and 2 staffing coordinators. Our engineering is divided among 3 areas; Systems Software, Platform software and Hardware. I handle all of system software. My responsibilities involve full cycle recruiting. While you need to do it all, I excel at the account management. I think in the 60+ people I’ve hired, I’ve only had one person turn down an offer. I think if you really do a good job taking care of candidates as well as managing the process, you will have a better outcome. I currently support 15 managers and one VP and they really respect and appreciate me. They count on me to be responsive, knowledgeable, and help them achieve their goals. That coupled with my good intuition helps me be a successful recruiter.

BRENDAN: I represent Palm everyday when I use my Treo. I also give out free gaming cards when I see Treo users. I attend the recruiter’s luncheon every month and network. I also represent Palm at Project Hired.

Recommendations For Brendan

“Brendan is such a pleasure to work with. He is personable and friendly, an excellent listener, and instantly makes you feel comfortable. Brendan is a great recruiter who understands the needs of his client group at Palm and works hard to hire top talent. Brendan works long hours and there are many days where he is working well into the evening talking to candidates. I would recommend Brendan to any company as I know they will be lucky to have him!” January 4, 2008

Lisa Paraker-Jacoby, Contract Recruiter, Palm

“I had the great pleasure of working with Brendan on a particularly daunting task, hiring engineers for overseas design centers. I was amazed at how Brendan working locally was able to tap into global networks of engineers, including those on Linkedin, to identify top talent in the regions we were targeting. He work tirelessly, around the clock, to contact candidates. I was deligheted with Brendan's ability to understand the both the job requirements and the type of person we were targeting. Every person that he brought to the hiring team's attention was a highly qualified candidate. The entire team appreciated Brendan's level of scrutiny and screening of candidates prior to presenting them to hiring managers. The team was able to meeting all its hiring objectives. I hope to have the opportunity to work with Brendan on future hiring projects.” April 13, 2007

Matt Schlegel, Director, Hardware Engineering, Palm
