Earlier today, Inc. magazine announced the rankings for the 2014 Inc. 500|5000, an annual ranking of the fastest-growing private companies in the United States.

The 2014 companies join the ranks of other entrepreneurial success stories such as Microsoft, Timberland, Under Armour, Jamba Juice, Clif Bar, Pandora, Patagonia, Oracle and Zappos.com. Additionally, this year's list added such powerhouses as GoPro, Bridger, Fuhu, Tough Mudder, Bowlmor, and Lending Club.

The list is ranked according to percentage revenue growth when comparing 2010 to 2013. To qualify, companies must have been founded and generating revenue by March 31, 2010. They had to be U.S.-based, privately held, for profit, and independent – not subsidiaries or divisions of other companies – as of December 31, 2013. 

This year, the Inc. 500 companies exhibited a median growth rate of 1,828 percent – up 1,739 percent from 2013 – and collectively created more than 46,000 jobs. Of the elite entrepreneurs leading these companies, more than 90 percent are also their companies’ founders. And sixteen percent scored high enough to be classified as “exceptional” by Gallup, an American research-based, global performance-management consulting company, as compared to the two percent national sample.
