Web Development and Customer Service. Who Knew?

If you’re into working on your own, don’t think that choosing web development means you get to hole up in your office and work for hours on end by yourself.

The guys at DevelopIntelligence helped provide some insight on how we connect web development to customer service.

Web developers have more to do than just write code. They have to help customers determine what they want and then deliver a website that is the epitome of their vision. This requires good customer service skills and the ability to guide a customer from a general idea of what the website should accomplish and look like to a high-quality, finished site.

As you prepare for your web development career, don’t neglect to build soft skills in the area of customer service. Clients often need help figuring out what they want and identifying how to attain it. That is where a successful web developer comes in.

A web developer is not just an Internet artist. He or she asks the questions necessary to help a customer decide what the site should accomplish. According to USNews.com, they ask questions like, “‘What do you want your site to accomplish?’” and “‘What features do you want your site to have?’” This process requires many steps. A website design and writing the code are just two of the steps. Add in checking for site problems, fixing them, running a test site by the client, and then putting the site on the customer’s server are other necessary parts of building a good site.

Developers have to be familiar with a client’s products, services, and potential/actual customers/audience to create a site that resonates well with them. To do this, developers should spend a significant amount of time with each client, learning what is important to the client and what is necessary to create the best possible site.

Web developers are more than masters of code. They are the architects of websites that are built upon a solid foundation of knowledge regarding each client’s needs. By taking into consideration what clients want, you will be able to deliver a fully-functioning site that speaks to a client’s target audience.
