If You Can’t Say Something Nice, At Least Let the Candidate Know They Didn’t Get the Job

Respect

Yes, hiring for a position is a lot of work and can get stressful. But don’t forget there’s a person behind each resume that floods into your inbox. At the end of the day, there is a real person on the other side of this process hoping and praying to hear from you. Let your candidates know, even those that don’t quite fit the bill, that you respect the time and effort they took in applying for your position.

Depending on your industry, it isn’t unusual for a job post to yield an overwhelming number of responses. But that’s no excuse to leave candidates guessing on the status of their application.

Build Relationships

Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither are strong relationships with candidates. Responding in a timely fashion keeps your applicants from expecting the worst and moving on to other positions. If it’s a ‘no’ for one position, it might be a ‘yes’ for a different position down the road. By keeping an open line of communication with these candidates, you strengthen your applicant pool for the next open position.

Social Media Soapbox

If there is one thing we all know to be true, it’s that people love to complain on social media; and your business is not immune to that truth. Treat all applicants with respect and avoid what could be a very negative review of going through the hiring process with your company. People are more connected than ever, social media provides the megaphone people need to broadcast their message loud and clear. Stay on top or your hiring process and let people off the hook – politely – as soon as the decision has been made and avoid angst-filled comments or reviews on your social media profiles.

It’s Easy

It would be one thing if this process was done with snail mail and telephone calls, but the process is faster and more efficient than ever. With a workflow tool in place, you can monitor, track and reply to applicants with the click of a button. Craft automatic replies to send in phases of the hiring process to simplify and significantly decrease the time you spend recruiting, and the time applicants spend waiting.

Share thoughts and reviews with teammates within the system to decrease the number of emails sent back and forth.

Show your candidates that you respect their efforts, keep your organization on the good side of social and do it all with little to no effort.
