Creating a New Business? How to Make It Official the Easy Way

Congratulations on taking the plunge and starting your own business. This is an extremely exciting time, but it can also be a little daunting. There are so many things to think about and do in order to get your business off the ground—and one of the most important is making it official. In this blog post, we'll cover the basics of how to form a new business. Whether you're just starting out or you've been in business for a while, this guide will help you make sure you're on the right track.

Choose the Right Business Structure

One of the first things you need to do when forming a new business is decide on the right business structure. This can seem like a daunting task, but it's actually not that complicated. There are four main types of business structures: sole proprietorship, partnership, limited liability company (LLC), and corporation. The type of business you have will determine which type of structure is right for you.

Register Your Business Name With the State

Once you've decided on the right business structure, the next step is to register your business name with the state in which your business will be operating. This is also known as filing for a "fictitious name" or "doing business as (DBA)." The process for doing this can vary from state to state, so it's important to check with your state's secretary of state office to find out what's required.

Get a Federal Tax ID Number

The next step in making your new business official is to obtain a federal tax ID number from the IRS (Internal Revenue Service). This is also known as an Employer Identification Number (EIN). You'll need this number when filing taxes and opening a bank account for your new business. You can apply for an EIN online, by fax, or by mail.

Get Local Licenses and Permits

Depending on what type of business you're starting, you may need to obtain certain local licenses and permits in order to operate legally. You might want to consult with a lawyer for more info on this part of the process. Some companies, like Boynton Waldron Doleac Woodman & Scott P.A., know that this can help the business formation process go a lot smoother. For example, if you're starting a restaurant, you'll need to obtain a food service license from your local health department. If you're starting a construction company, you may need to get a contractor's license from your city or county government. Again, it's important to check with your local government officials to find out what's required for your specific type of business.

Starting a new business can seem like a daunting task, but it doesn't have to be complicated or overwhelming. By following these simple steps—choosing the right structure, registering your name, obtaining an EIN, and getting any necessary licenses and permits—you can make sure your new business is off to a solid start. Congratulations again on taking this exciting step—we wish you all the best in your new venture.
