Office and Compensation of the President of the United States

With the President calling for a $500,000 ceiling in CEO compensation for CEO's of companies receiving Federal assistance, I was wondering what the total compensation is for office of the President.

...aggregate amount of $400,000 a year, to be paid monthly, and in addition an expense allowance of $50,000 to assist in defraying expenses relating to or resulting from the discharge of his official duties.

Okay, so we have $450K so far - to be open, the unused portion of the $50K goes back to the Treasury each year.

...traveling expenses of the President of the United States such sum as Congress may from time to time appropriate, not exceeding $100,000 per annum.

Now we're up to $550K.

...the President is authorized to appoint and fix the pay of employees in the White House Office without regard to any other provision of law regulating the employment or compensation of persons in the Government service.

Here it gets complicated because the President has an assigned staff comprised of people being compensated at different salary grades. If I'm reading correctly, this amounts to paying for at minimum, 103 employees, with more who can be hired as regular employees at the discretion of the President plus those who can be hired as temp workers and consultants. Even more, the President can hire an unspecified number of people for There are authorized to be appropriated each fiscal year to the President such sums as may be necessary for (1) the care, maintenance, repair, alteration, refurnishing, improvement, air-conditioning, heating, and lighting (including electric power and fixtures) of the Executive Residence at the White House; (2) the official expenses of the White House Office; (3) the official entertainment expenses of the President; (4) the official entertainment expenses for allocation within the Executive Office of the President; and (5) the subsistence expenses of persons in the Government service while traveling on official business in connection with the travel of the President. This a large pot of compensation unequivocally in the millions.

This is far more than the $500K ceiling for the CEOs of bailout recipients.

It is said this is a very hard office to give up -not just because of the power but also because of the standard of living. Maybe that's why they see it fitting to spend 800 MILLION DOLLARS to get elected? Gee, where do you think that money COMES FROM and do you think they fork it over expecting NOTHING in return? I don't.
