Lead SDET Openings on Windows Search Team...based in Redmond

I have four Lead SDET openings on the Windows Live Search, Core Experience, and API Teams that I'm looking to fill. Checkout the below job descriptions and let me know if you're interested in learning more about the positions and the Window Live teams.

Lead SDET (position #252062)
The Live Search Core Experience Team is looking for a Senior SDET lead that is passionate about making Live Search the best search experience on the planet. Search is a huge strategic investment for Microsoft, the goal is to be the next multi-billion dollar business for the company. Career growth and accelerated experiences abound because of our continued business growth and the ever changing business landscape. This is a green field opportunity for an experienced SDET lead to build up technical, people, and management skills. The Core Experience team is responsible for the user experience with Search. One key part of this team is the instrumentation team. The Instrumentation team is focused on ensuring that we can accurately track events happening on the client and on the web server. Our data collected is used for decisions on the future direction of Search. This space has a strong set of competitors (those *other* search companies) with a mature feature set - the immediate challenge is to deliver core functionality while working on killer features that keep users coming back for more.As the test lead of this team you will be working with experienced dev & PM teams. The SDETs on the team are already in place so that you will have appropriate resources. The feature set and scope of the team have grown dramatically and we have a need for a strong lead on the team. You will not be starting from scratch, but you will be mentoring and growing team members. In this role you will be responsible for: managing performance and mentoring of SDETs, ensuring career plans and crisp commitments are in place for all SDETs on your team, owning the test strategy for our major releases (and 8 week incremental releases), owning scheduling and estimation of test work, ensuring the right automation and test coverage is in place, contributing to the plans for automation libraries/capabilities, working closely with dev to optimize the engineering pipeline for feature throughput with high quality. You’ll have a seat at the table during concept discussion through prototyping and design. You will own designing automation to monitor production system reliability, availability, and recoverability, designing and driving development of test frameworks and infrastructure to effectively automate the various feature areas. You’ll own measurement of quality throughout the engineering pipeline, and ultimately use this data to make ship decisions with your triad. You’ll be the primary customer advocate leveraging feedback to drive change into the product. You’ll work on a young, but growing test team who are passionate about quality and building a testable product. Come experience what it’s like to test a world-class service that serves 10’s of millions of unique customers issuing 100+ million queries a day. Stress, performance, relevance, and evaluating live site data, and other complex problems must be conquered to effectively test our product. You will ultimately deliver new user value with some of the quickest turnaround from concept to completion at Microsoft, and be able to easily show your family and friends what you work on at Microsoft.A successful candidate will have the following qualifications: Strong design, coding and debugging skills in C++/C#4+ years experience managing and leading FTE SDETsStrong project management experience, spanning multiple projectsDemonstrated experience delivering results through collaboration across disciplines, feature teams, and partners.Demonstrated experience shipping products at Microsoft (Services a big plus but not required)Exceptional test aptitude and expertise in formal and informal testing techniques as well as quality measurementExceptional customer focus and eye for qualityA BS degree in computer science or commensurate experience is requiredKnowledge in the areas of online service testing, protocol, API, stress, reliability, performance testing, and testing distributed systems is a plus

Lead SDET (position #252499)
The goal of our team is simple: index every database in the world and expose it in a structured, strongly typed fashion. The first iteration (currently in production) allows anyone with an XML feed (schema not required) and some sample queries to contribute to search relevance without even writing code. The next generation, which you can help design, will scale to billions of entities, support queries across multiple data sources, and include solutions for aggregating, merging, and de-duping of data as well as a host of other challenging relevance and information retrieval problems. We have a world-class competitor and a startup atmosphere where anything is possible. Join us and be a part of the next come-from-behind story at Microsoft.Go to any search engine and search for “Seattle software engineering jobs making 100k+ per year”. The top results are mediocre at best. Is that because the jobs don’t exist? Is it because the information isn’t available? No! This is a challenging yet solvable engineering problem that you could help solve on the XAP Structured Data Team. The ingestion and searching of structured data poses many of the next big challenges for Web Search. Rich content managed in proprietary databases hidden behind dynamic interfaces has rapidly deepened the web, but is not accessible by any search engine web crawlers. Today’s deep web coverage through search engines is disproportionally small compared to that information’s value to customers. Some of this rich content is already being ingested through the Search Structured Data ingestion platform into the Search Feeds system (Index Serve platform for structured data) for several partner teams, and we are going big on the SD team with the goal to index much more content, from 1000’s of sources, to build new and innovative user interaction models that we think will change the game in search. There are several areas of investment for this team including structured data ingestion, relevance, and query classification. Complex queries such as the example above require equally complex parsing and classification algorithms in order to understand the searcher’s intent and to put all the query words to work in finding the best results. Coupling that classification with the right relevance algorithms enables us to improve this experience dramatically, presenting not just “acceptable” results but a well-organized, structured response that surpasses user expectations, enabling browse, filter, sort, refine, pivot, and tailor your results as you navigate through information rich pages of all different content types (e.g. web results, news, images, music, books). This is a platform team, we are investing to scale to thousands of data sources, and 100's of millions of documents. Our largest current partner is the Live Search Commerce team, see it in action today at http://search.live.com/products/?q=zune. Powered by XAP Structured data!Core Search Test is looking for a high performing, experienced Senior Test Lead to manage one of the several XAP Structured Data teams (Relevance, Ingestion, Query Classification are the current teams). The successful candidate will be involved with feature planning, designing for testability, identification and mitigation of risks to customers/partners and overall quality, definition and measurement of platform SLA, live site KPI definition and measurement, recruiting, coaching and growing ICs and Leads, building the systems and gather the data to enable the continuous assessment of quality and release readiness, working closely with dev to identify and decrease friction in the engineering pipeline, and own defining and executing on the overall quality strategy required to ship a large scale data processing platform in a distributed environment. Our team follows scrum methodology, and moves very fast. We work hand in hand with Dev and PM at all stages of the product cycle. The XAP team management triad (TM/GPM/DM) values team excellence.

Lead SDET (position #251962)

The Live Search API Team is looking for a Senior SDET lead who is passionate about making Live Search the most relevant and prevalent search engine on the planet. The Search API opens up various avenues of tremendous possibilities for exposing our Core Search Engine, thus increasing our query share, building a vibrant Live Search ecosystem of partners and customers, increasing our brand recognition and enabling monetization of traffic to bring a steady revenue stream to the search business. The core of the API challenge is to enable the usage of all data in our Core Search backend - be it the crawled web index or the data ingested thru the feeds system and surfaced as answers - by our internal and external partners/customers. The implicit challenge here is the usability of the APIs to target personas like the web application developers (that need a lot of power and flexibility) and also the casual publisher implementing site search using easy to use Search controls (wrapped around the core APIs).Not only does this space provide a great opportunity to work on the various bleeding-edge web service interfaces but also interface with the middle level and backend platforms of the Core Search Engine powering Live Search. As the test lead of this team, you will be responsible for: recruiting and building a world class test team, managing performance and mentoring of ICs, ensuring career plans and crisp commitments are in place for all ICs on your team, owning the test strategy for our 6 month major releases (and 4-6 week incremental releases), owning scheduling and estimation of test work, ensuring the right automation and test coverage is in place, working closely with dev to optimize the engineering pipeline for feature throughput with high quality. You’ll have a seat at the table during concept discussion through prototyping and design. You will own designing automation to monitor production system reliability, availability, and recoverability, designing and driving development of test frameworks and infrastructure to effectively automate the various feature areas. You will own defining, automatically measuring/monitoring and enforcing Service Level Agreements (SLAs) with internal and external components / partners / customers. You’ll own measurement of quality throughout the engineering pipeline, and ultimately use this data to make ship decisions with your triad. You’ll be the primary customer advocate leveraging feedback to drive change into the product. You’ll work on a rock star team with PMs and Devs who see Test as a peer discipline and are passionate about quality and building a testable product. Search is a huge strategic investment for Microsoft, the goal is to be the next multi-billion dollar business for the company. Career growth and accelerated experiences abound because of our continued business growth and the ever changing business landscape. Come experience what it’s like to test a world-class service that serves 10’s of millions of unique customers issuing 100+ million queries a day. Stress, performance, security, relevance, and evaluating live site data, and other complex problems must be conquered to effectively test our product. You will ultimately deliver new user value with some of the quickest turnaround from concept to completion at Microsoft, and be able to finally show your family and friends what you actually work on at Microsoft.A successful candidate will have the following qualifications: Strong design, coding and debugging skills in C++/C#4+ years experience managing and leading FTE SDETsStrong project management experience, spanning multiple projectsDemonstrated experience delivering results through collaboration across disciplines, feature teams, and partners.Demonstrated experience shipping products at Microsoft (Services a big plus but not required)Exceptional test aptitude.
