Recording - Recruiting Animal Show - Doug Whatley

Doug Whatley is a headhunter and career coach in Austin. He is a classic No Cold Call - I do everything by referral recruiter.

It took me a long time to hone in on his primary virtue - which is being a local go-to guy. Near the end of the show the @animal crew chose to focus on something else: Doug's offbeat way of getting paid.

Paid part I am still trying to figure out. It was slow go at first, but came around in the end. Jerry once again had a stellar Intro.....

I did like when you attempted to get him to role play a cold call. Till next week......

PART ONE...

I think I‘ve discovered why Doug Whatley’s performance on the Recruiting Animal Show, yesterday, Sep 14th went South.  It was confusing, somewhat, to everyone—particularly for Recruiting Animal, Jerry, Cathy, Allen Maureen, Rayanne and Dave—because they pressed and pressed what seemed to be an Artful Dodger.  But after hearing the show replay (thx Animal for posting the show as a blog on RBC) I noticed the clues yelping right there in slow-mo replay.  I highly recommend visiting The Recruiting Animal Show site and replaying some of the shows available there—they’re informative, instructive—and ENTERTAINING.  The Animal/Jerry tag team follows in the wake of Abbott & Costello; Martin & Lewis; and The Smothers Brothers—but I digress.

And before I discuss my theory (PART TWO) of the Doug Whatley phenomena—please be advised that if you are going to appear on the Recruiting Animal Show—it could be hazardous to your comfort zone.  The Recruiting Animal will be the first to warn upcoming guests to be aware of that fact.  “If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. He's what Tim Sanders calls a Lovecat. But people are not very good at relating the blow by blow details of what they do.

I saw that tweet and agree. Italian jokes aside- I thought in the end Doug gave a solid assessment of 'social recruiting'. His preferred tool is LinkedIn (not mine) which he manages daily, interacts (offers a touch), and stays in front of folks. This allows him to seize on an opportunity if it presents itself. Might not work for everyone, but it obviously works OK for him.

I think he has a few strengths

1. He seems to know the people in certain fields (eg HR) in Austin very well so he has quick access to an up to date database. This is his main strength. When a search in his field comes up he delivers

2. He does push himself in front of people until they can't help but remember him. He does this with a lot of people until it seems that everybody knows him.

3. He gets referrals. Not sure what he has done to earn them but it has something to do with the 2 things just mentioned.
