What do We Really Want from Hiring Managers?

If there is one thing that both internal and 3rd party recruiters can agree upon it's that it's always the hiring manager's fault.  They seems to be the universal scapegoat.  Geez, Amy blames one 10 times a day for something or other.

;p

But, since we will probably never get a hiring manager masochistic enough to come on and get spanked here,

let me play one on the internet and you can fire away at me.  Let me go first.

Recruiters (internal or external) are a bunch of whiny b words who think that all I have to do all day is answer

their dumb questions and give them feedback on their worthless candidates.

They don't realize that the fact I have an open req means I am working the job of at least 2 people.

I wish, just once, they'd say to me "Let's make a scheduled time each day week, every other day, whatever

is necessary so that I can plan for it.  Instead of the helter skelter leaving of messages.  And then they take it

personally if I don't call back!

Look, I spent an hour with you at the beginning telling you what I'm looking for.  I'm willing to talk to you

furtheri if I feel you're getting it.  If you are rehashing the same stuff and sending irrelevant candidates, I have

no time for you.

So act a little more professional. Show me that you are listening and I will work with you.  Otherwise, step aside.

I await your replies (except that Valentino dude, he's scary).

Sincerely,

Hi Ring in Dis Place.

@Bill--just for that dis--I will be the first responder to your blog post.

Actually--I agree with you fully.  And I agree with Amy and any internal and external recruiter who gets to work with an absentee hiring manager.

But it is fair and helpful of you to remind us in the trenches that hiring managers are only human and deserve to work with a respectful, dedicated, responsive and effective professional recruiter (and vice versa).

That wasn't too scary...maybe that cute baby mountain goat softened me (good use of a photo in a blog).

Bill you are so right. There is ONE I blame several times a day. The other twenty I work with are pretty awesome and the weekly coffee appt works wonders. :)

I love my hiring managers and the HR people I work for. I fired all the ones who don't want to talk to me. We are all happy with that arrangement. That's why I would never make it as an internal recruiter. However I learned a long time ago that if I am sending candidates that people like they talk to me. It's my job to figure out what they want and get it to them with as little noise as possible. Nobody likes yappy recruiters except other yappy recruiters cause they don't listen to each other anyway.

I love the baby goat.

I love baby goats but I found out the hard way when I brought two home, that baby goats grow up to be big goats who really do stink and have the ability to jump on the hood of one's brand new car with their nasty little sharp hooves.

Cabrito tacos do not destroy cars.

Bill I showed this to a hiring manager and he loved it.  :)  Couldn't agree more and wanted me to thank you on his behalf.  He's also curious about Valentino...

Tell him I got his back and we're all curious about Valentino.  Really, I find if you set parameters early and if you really listen- a hiring manager is a much better stakeholder to work with.

After being a city boy all my life, I moved up to the wine country, here people also have farm animals.  I walk by this little farm and a boy was playing with these 2 little spotted animals with long legs.

I said "Cute dogs, kid" He said "They're goats, mister"

I just laughed outloud at the "cute dogs".  I was standing at the barn one day, a fellow drove up and asked me if i would consider selling the brown colt in the pasture,he had never seen a horse that moved that well.

I don't own any brown horses they are all black and i don't have any colts.  I looked at him puzzled and asked him to point out the one he was talking about.  When i looked where he was pointing, i laughed and said, sure i'll sell him.  He asked how much i wanted for him since he was such a great moving baby.

My response:  "You can have him for free if you can catch him, that's an antelope running with my horses."

His response as he got in his car and escaped, "Oh, F*&k, i am from LA"
