Robert Greenleaf, former Director of Management Research at AT&T, noted that:

The servant-leader is servant first...It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. That person is sharply different from one who is leader first, perhaps of the need to assuage an unusual power drive or to acquire material possessions.

In recruiting, and I've noticed that this occurs both on the corporate and third party sides, many leaders are in fact, merely accumulators of "rank." They act officious but could care less about building the organization than being recognized as a key player. They want to close job orders or requisitions and anything that prevents this is to be hunted down and eliminated.

Very odd indeed.

Interesting concept, Steve - servant leadership. I think we're seeing the emergence of some very serious Servant Leaders on networks like these. Why is it so hard for some to see the connections?
