Businesses may not be getting access to key workers following the introduction of the cap on the number of employees from outside the European Union (EU).

This is according to the FT.com, which reports on business secretary Vince Cable's comments that the cap could have a negative impact on the UK's economic recovery.

While he supports the cap, Mr Cable has voiced the opinion that it should be less rigid.

Meanwhile, businesses across the UK have complained that the volume of employees allowed from outside the EU is too low.

This is because the interim cap allocates the number of immigrant workers for each company based on 2009 employment levels - when many businesses had fewer employees due to the recession.

There are fears that companies may struggle as a result, therefore impacting on the economic recovery.

Recent figures from the Office for National Statistics show that unemployment levels among the over-50s are increasing.
