Scotland is experiencing its highest level of unemployment since 1996, which may interest those trying to set up a recruitment agency.

Figures from the New Policy Institute have shown that, while unemployment in Scotland was lower than in England when the recession first hit, these roles reversed in 2009.

Unemployment in Scotland then continued to climb and is still higher than that of England.

By the end of 2009, the percentage of people of working age receiving out-of-work benefits rose to 18.2 per cent, which marks a rise from the 16.8 recorded in 2007.

There has also been a shift from full-time to part-time employment, the study notes.

Recent figures from the Office for National Statistics show that unemployment among the over-50s is climbing, with numbers rising by 14,000 in England between April and June.
