Well I'm not Susan but I think the first question directly impacts the second. When you enter a comm like a bull in a china shop and start posting jobs and hitting people with what are, in essence, ads, they disengage

Where they are engaging they are getting results - Twitter is producing hires but via the biz leads versus recruiters

Chet - I think your motives are questioned when you take the "bull" approach Maren describes. Its a dance at first and you need to play and have fun - then results will arise

Chet, I think when you follow some of the above guidelines, that tends to happen less and less. When you can give before taking and provide real value to your community, people will eventually come to you.

When you enter a community and immediately want to extract value without contributing the community either doesn't respond or responds negatively. It can be detrimental to the brand

But the analogy goes for every situation. If you go to a party, recruiting event, or start a web site it cannot be about what you want but what you can offer

I am sitting on the company name for the moment, but a Minnesota $5B is redoing their corporate web site to add career pages specifically for sales, tech, and marketing folks. Set up a Twitter account for jobs, and added RSS feeds too

it's fascinating actually, because I have been invited to eerily similar groups and occassionally joined but it's the intentional leadership here that engages people and makes each member feel valued rather than as a connection commodity

the thing that strikes me about socnets community etc, is the power of the individual can sometimes eclipse the power of the corp presence and in effect be a "beard" for a lame duck employer
