"A Little Chicken Soup for the Networking Soul I found on an Island" - A week ago my wife, Heidi and I returned from a 5 day excursion in Jamaica with RecruitingBlogs.com (RBC) Founder, Jason Davis and his lovely wife Michelle, their friends, and Dennis Smith and his lovely wife, Kathryn. Dennis is not only among those who inspired me to blog, but a terrific friend. He was the fortunate winner of Broadlook's "Recruiting Video Contest" on RBC. We want to thank Broadlook and esp. our friend, it's CEO, Donato Diorio
for making this possible. Broadlook has shown consistent support for the Recruitosphere community and they have been a friend of what we do here at SixDegreesfromDave every step of the way. I hope everyone shows their recognition as well, and checks out Broadlook's excellent sourcing products - which I personally use regularly. You can check out the viral video everyone is talking about ... as Dennis Smith jumps a Cliff I soon followed after that might as well have been 300 feet - it was that scary and all the more satisfying.

Now, as I write this, a few might think this discussion is out of sync with today's economic environment. Surely, had I not bought the tickets before the recession, I question whether I would have taken the "jump" myself - but there is a lesson that is relevant to us all. I would never have known Jason Davis, Dennis Smith, or been a partner to RBC or been in Jamaica had I not ventured into being a networking evangelist three years ago. This trip and those who attended were all unquestionably a residual of networking specifically and the recruitosphere in general.

For those of you who open this newsletter but don't take advantage of it's quasi-weekly updated networking lists, consider the impact. This trip exemplifies the rewards developed as a direct result of networking. Networking Changes lives. For the many who have since been laid off, or fear it - I have said for years Networking is not a bandwagon you jump into simply when you need it. It is a vehicle you hitch a ride with in both good times and bad. You never know what country you will be end up with and with what new friends who bring meaning to your life, but networking has a way of creating opportunities you never expected nor knew existed. I didn't expect the changes myself. But they are just as available to you, esp. as you seek a lifeline to meet your family obligations, meet a mortgage and wonder why it is so difficult to land your next gig. The only thing stopping you, even in this terrible economic tsunami, is yourself from reaching out to the lifeline of networking with someone who knows someone else who can connect you to decision makers. In this climate, we learn no one is an island - unless we choose to stand alone.

I am hoping all of you are ready to welcome new friends and add them to your community. In these tough economic time, we could all use new friends, right? I know everyone says, "Ill do it later" - but what is two minutes of time when the appreciation is heart felt from the recipient? Make someone feel special like you did and feel it again passing it forward!

TWO SIMPLE RULES
• Tell them Dave Mendoza from SixDegrees from Dave highly recommended you Connect. (I Double Check !)
• NEVER, EVER - solicit, spam those listed. It undermines the reputation of our approach to extend authentic and sincere, networking value. Even if tempted because you are seeking job opportunities and you see a manager - best to start subtle, outreach with a paragraph about yourself in your invite - ask how you can bring value - First. Send invites that include your contact signature, and a bio paragraph to make a lasting first impression.
• You risk membership if the 2 Rules are not followed. Invites are randomly tracked.
