An increasing number of employers are taking more notice of punctuality thanks to the economic conditions.

According to research conducted on behalf of CareerBuilder, 15 per cent of employers would fire an employee who was late two or three times, while 12 per cent would give marching orders to one who is late four or five times.

The most unusual excuses used by workers include a bank robbery in front of an employer's house, volcanic ash delays and concerns about an impending comet impact.

"Getting organised and preparing for the upcoming day the night before can help to improve punctuality and make the commute less hectic," advised Tony Roy, managing director for CareerBuilder UK.
