What an interesting way to start a Saturday. Having been in a giant corp prior to starting on my own I believe that RPO and internal processes have killed the ability to get candidates, and stories of talent through the door.

A recent example was a major consultancy who deferred me to Alexander Mann as they were the RPO choice and could not take my candidate to line. Best guy for the job but not considered because of their process.......

It is a struggle as our fees are expensive and we can't cover the volume of resource necessary to source candidate's.

Large recruitment companies use their level of contacts in corporations, their brand and reach to attract candidates, their experience across verticals, their financial stability, their international presence and above all their reputation and the security that offers.

The achiles heel of the large recruitment company is their lack of flexibility, their inherent arrogance and their speed of processing. Flexibility in charge rates, retainers and approach. Arrogance regarding exclusivity, presumption of business and willingness to listen. Speed of processing with focus on a specific opportunity and specific candidates to minimise time to close. Additional factors or advantage could include specialisation ( real understanding of niche skills/industries), customer focus ( as a small player, each customer really counts), willingness to use new approaches such as professional networking sites and a real hands on involvement with both customer and candidate.

In closing, the reality of current global economics offers opportunity to those smaller companies who can get the job done more quickly, more personally and at a more competitive cost.

Good luck in your ventures Rahat!

Hello Rahat,

One trick the big guys use is to close long term deals with a client, to act as preferred supplier. Then you can't get in at all, or have to work through the preferred supplier. You can still make money that way but the end user will never know that great candidate really came from you.

Some solutions for a succesful entry might lie in marketing. For example: ask yourself what makes you different from your competitors. What are your unique selling points (or unique reasons for buying). What's your vision, mission, strategy and core values. Maybe you operate in a niche market and you can bring in lot of knowledge and a big network.

Furthermore I guess networking and generating (free) publicity could help a lot. Sow now and harvest later. But ok I just started myself and in the process of doing the above, so I still have to find out for myself if it's going to work out. If you want to share views concerning the marketing aspect I'll be more then happy to. Thanks and good luck.

Regards,

Niels Jordens

Hi Rahat,

The only tool that company uses is PR. Big companies use it on both side of the supplier chain i.e. they held many events where they can meet company people face to face and create an image in their eyes and they also create brand among job seekers.
