Topic: Pods of Influence: erent. I have goals that seem bigger than dreams. And high hopes - high apple pie, in the sky hopes. Moving mountains will do that to you. To make predictions is silly, for we want to predict grand and wonderful things - when the truth of the matter is that grand and wonderful things will come much later, not when recovery is just peaking around the corner. But the drive to that corner is filled with adventure and learning. And of course, a back step or two. Every day I learn something new about business, the recruiting industry and social media and I have made it my goal to pass that information along to current and former clients, friends and family. It is part of my transparency trip. My only prediction (it's not really a prediction) for 2010 is that "community" will continue to be an important part of recruiting. And not just the recruiting industry but throughout the business world, we will continue to make connections that can potentially make a difference to our businesses and to our lives: social media has created this lovely monster. Relationships are easier to maintain now than ever before. Targeted marketing ensures the opportunity to reach our desired audience. We have created pods of influence that we turn to for work, assistance, education, entertainment, nostalgia, friendship and love/family. These pods are easily accessible now through facebook, twitter, email, chat/IM/text, mobile devices, and, to a less social degree, LinkedIn. Multiple venues and forums with the purposes of connecting people and information sharing. I could never have imagined this world ten years ago. In the last week, I have connected with several individuals that I haven't seen in twenty odd years. One person I had only met once thirty years ago but we are now doing business: the magic of social media. That is what I mean by community, by a pod. We have a unique opportunity to share information and conduct business with people we know or can now get to know. It is incredible to me to think of where the next ten years of rapid innovation and technology will take us. Topic: Life in the Quiet: light to Steamboat Springs, where I stayed at a ski lodge for five days. I don’t ski and I had never been to Steamboat Springs. Why would I go somewhere I had never been, away from everything I knew and loved? I think it was the anonymity that appealed to me. The just showing up with three books in tow and planting my butt in a comfy chair by a roaring fireplace twice the size of me. No one I knew had been there before; it was my escape. Every day, I watched skiers and snowboarders race down several hills that dropped right in front of the humongous picture window where I spent my days. I slept in, read books, and ordered quesadillas and hot chocolate with peppermint schnapps for lunch - everyday. No one questioned me or wondered why I was alone. I was just thankful to have some time to re-group and re-focus before I faced the major changes ahead of me: my father’s death, my impending divorce and a job change. Stressed? You could say so. Life in the quiet – that’s what I called my time in Steamboat Springs. Sometimes, you just have to take or make the time in order to instigate a recovery, of sorts. At different times in our lives we are the skiers, taking familiar trails, using poles for stability. Other times we are the snowboarders, daringly plowing our way down an unfamiliar path, seemingly fearless and ready for adventure. Then there are the days when you simply sit back and watch the worker bees and the adventurers as they attack life, take risks, and jump on the business opportunities that line their way. Taking a break assists in maintaining balance that many claim to have down pat. The one thing I have to consistently work to maintain is balance. I love to work. I love to play. And I usually have to remind myself to take that down time and to learn to relax. It is fear that motivates me. Stay busy. Make work happen. Give as much as you can. Topic: Who Has Your Back?: As a matter of fact, when he brought it up, I thought he was joking. Why would he want to take up diving? We had never even mentioned it as something we would like to do. I was kind of at a loss. I wondered what the attraction was and decided that if he was going to dive, than so was I. I scheduled my first class and, frankly, I was surprised by the number of people enrolled and how the class was conducted. The first two sessions were in a classroom with lectures and videos. I felt like I was in high school or a horrible college lecture hall all over again. I questioned why I was there and why, again, did I want to do this. But then I had my first water class in a backyard pool. We studied and assembled the gear and had to prove we knew what we were doing and why. And we practiced in the pool; I even mastered underwater mask clearing. I recognized immediately why I wanted to learn this particular sport. It was incredibly freeing and the liberty it brought? Unmatched. Our next class would take place on a boat, in the Pacific Ocean. We met at a dock in San Pedro and proceeded to Catalina where our entire class did a boat dive. It was exciting and scary all at the same time. I had to partner with a dive buddy - never dive alone! I learned the in's and out's of SCUBA, and was awed by the magnitude of the underwater world. The complexities overwhelming, the potential danger exciting. I was taken in and practically devastated by the power and beauty. Several times during the course of a dive, I got in trouble because I tried to go it alone. "You have a dive buddy for a reason." But rocks, plants, and the exquisiteness of the undersea life captured me. As I followed the group, I stopped - suspended in a kelp bed and studied the Garibaldi, California's state fish. I turned away from "the team" and proceeded on the adventure that lay before me, that is until I noticed the group begin to pull away and I struggled to catch up to them. But I couldn't catch up with them, no possibility. I kicked, I paddled and no luck, I couldn't go anywhere. Kelp had wrapped around the equipment on my back and trapped me. Out of nowhere, one of the dive masters showed up from behind and saved me. Literally. I thanked him later on the boat and he just reminded me of the dive buddy rule and I shamefully agreed to be more cognizant. Life presents opportunities for greatness and adventure all around. We have a tendency to rely on only ourselves, to give only ourselves credit when greatness is achieved or journeys accomplished. Warnings usually consist of others' past experiences. It really is better to have a dive buddy, a designated driver, a partner, an advisor, a mentor, a coach, a friend to listen to, to share with, to face life's ups and downs. Someone that has your back- or at least the back of your SCUBA equipment. "Solitude never hurt anyone.
