And DHL closing their facility up the road didn't help," he trailed off, looking forlorn. "It's terrible." "One out of three? That's 33%!" I exclaimed. "You really think it's that high?" "Out of my customers, yeah, I'd say it's that high. My '08 hot-tub sales were off 90% over '07. Most of our income comes from the services we provide opening, maintaining and closing pools along with the chemicals we sell. We've been bustin' our asses to make our numbers," he added. "That's worse than the depression unemployment numbers," I commented. "Well, who thinks this isn't worse than the Depression?" he shot back. "How does that work - them opening their own pools?" I asked, trying to change the subject to something a little less painful. "Not too good," he answered. "Very few of them really know how to do it and even less of them get it right. They'll be callin' us to fix somethin' or other that they destroy in the process, for the most part," he volunteered. "It'd be cheaper for them to have us keep on doing what we ordinarily have done in the past - that way they don't have to pay for repairs." I can hear it now. Dear Hiring Manager, I do not have a resume on this candidate but i ran across him in a talent community. From what he posts on the web he seems to be a perfect fit for your position. Yes i have chatted with him and he really sounds cool, uh references, well no he doesn't want to provide those either. All you need to do is join this forum, log on and engage with him in your spare time. I am sure you will be impressed with all the top talent you and I can find online who don't want to prepare a resume but have the passion and drive to do a lot of blogging about what they do. They don't want to do a resume they just want to tell you about themselves and how passionate they are to change jobs. Am i what? Oh no sir, i have never been under any kind of psych care. Yes sir i realize you run the medical practice and don't spend a lot of time digging around in talent communities but gee just think of all the doctors and PHD's who spend their evenings chatting on the net, think of all the people you could meet. Yes sir, i realize that somebody is going to have to die before you have time to meet anyone else and the physicians you want are....hello, hello, hello KC If i called my clients and told them that i wanted them to interview a candidate without seeing a resume they would tell me they would be happy to call another recruiter. They even have their known colleagues that they personally interact with send them a CV before they will offer a position to their former medical partner. Thanks for the coffee offer but i would fear that there was something in it that would turn me into an artichoke. I bet your world is expanded wasn't that guy's name Leary or something like that? But have a great trip, the green lights look a lot greener. I suppose however if you are correct we will be printing off online profiles to send to the hiring manager cause trust me Clyde the hiring managers i know and work with won't log on and review a profile online unless they can then teleport that candidate into the corner of their office to show the folks they have supernatural powers…; Added by Sandra McCartt at 1:40pm on August 11, 2010

If you were with a group of people who also knew that the guy was a shrink (might even be a patient also) the first question when he left the table might be, "Hey Ken, how do you know Dr. Shrink? Now you have to either lie to your buddies or tell them that you thought about blowing up the office so decided you might need a little professional help or whatever that you might not want to discuss. You really might not want one of the group going back to the office saying," Ya know i think ole Ken may be having some problems he is sure friendly with Dr. Shrink. " I know he places docs but he didn't say the guy was a candidate of his. " (Cause even if he were a candidate or trying to hire somebody you wouldn't want everybody to know that either.) If many things are not on a need to know or confidential basis there would chaos everywhere mythinks. No matter what anybody tells you. Nothing is totally open, honest and transparent and if you think about it who wants to know everything about anybody. Yeeeckkk. That falls under the catagory of too much information in my book. I dont' want other recruiters to read my profile and figure out who my clients are by the HR Managers or internal recruiters i am connected with on Linkedin. Linkedin is a treasure trove of information that people have no idea they are putting out there if you follow up their list of connections. I can almost tell you if a candidate has had plastic surgery if they are connected with several plastics docs or skin care companies or that they are focused on looks etc. Think about it. it's fun to profile people then interview them and see if your profile from looking at their connections and company follows is what you think it is. Most internal recruiters will not share with you who the other recruiters are that they work with. If you want to know just look at the internal recruiter's connections. There they are. Then if you want to know who those recruiters are sending to your client just look at the recruiters connections in the field that the job falls into and you know who they are sending and on and on. My market is different- the Healthcare people I call are the same, more or less, as they've been since I started (when the wheel and fire was invented [1980]) so I have not had to make any adjustments for the 'newer crowd'. They all sound about the same...Allied Health has always been a younger crowd. My advantage is that I worked in Healthcare and speaka' de language/know the culture so I am accepted, generally speaking, when I call. Yes, occasionally I get some brat who acts like I'm interrupting him/her while they are in the middle of brain surgery but for the most part, they continue to take my calls as I've been doing since I started. Back when the wheel and fire..... And my Industrial Engineers/Industry Executives are still the same as they've been for the last fifteen years. They close their doors and they take my calls. That includes the Actuaries I call on, also. Actually, that includes most everyone I call. Most all of them have offices. So you can have your X's and Y's and Millenials, Ken. Again, better you than me. As for me, nothing is broken on my end...LI gives me names and background often enough that it helps but having been trained in recruitment the old fashioned way, I am not entirely dependent on LI to do my work. And in fact, in certain circles, LI doesn't have the names of the people I recruit so like I said, I take what LI gives and don't much sweat the rest. I don't prospect by email/LI messaging and if any of my peers caught me doing so I'd be subject to an ass whipping, most probably. Keeping in mind what you have said, the only issue I might care to debate (based on what Keith said, above) is this business of worrying about whether someone I call 'wants' to be called or doesn't 'want' to be called. Where I sit, they can have a Green flag or Red flag up for all to see but I'm damned if I'd ever let that prevent me from calling someone I am targeting. No one is going to decide for me whether or not I should or should not call on someone I believe could benefit from a client opportunity. Anyway, Ken, thanks for letting me know you got the young ones. If I ever need a snot nosed brat to fill a position with a client, I'll call you first. LOL... Topic: When Level of Care Means Something: her last surgery in a series of three to finally conclude a gall bladder ordeal that began the week before Christmas. It has been a rough two months, but having her on the mend and feeling so much better has been a blessing to our family.I looked around the room and calculated about 60 years of post graduate schooling. An incredible accomplishment for each, on a singular level, and even more impressive when you think about the combined efforts of each RN, BSN, Nurse Practitioner, Anesthesiologist, and Physician / Surgeon that hustled in and out of recovery. I was indeed thankful, given the level of care my mother has received throughout this whole ordeal. For someone whose last surgical procedure was in 1946 for an appendectomy, submitting to the testing, prodding, and necessary procedures was difficult. Level of care can mean everything.I always felt a certain pride when recruitng for healthcare professionals. It is one of the most rewarding and difficult areas of recruitment there is. Our firm provided direct recruitment on retainer to hospital and health care organizations. The healthcare sysytem where my mother had her surgeries performed was one of the finest and having had experience with the Human Resource departments, knowing the hospital's reputation eased much anxiety. My sister, who lives near my mom, works in health care currently and "knowing our stuff" was an obvious blessing. I really cannot say enough or be grateful enough.While some professions, such as medicine, require extendive schooling, others require an entrpreneurial mind and the extreme desire and work ethic to succeed. Four of the most intelligent men I have met in my life never went to college. One didn't even graduate from high school. So, smarts are not predicated by extended education. But.., is it possible TODAY to really succeed without a college education listed on your resume? It most assuredly depends upon your interests and desired career as to whether or not college is required.One of the things I always wanted my children to do was graduate college before they got married or started a family. I had waited to finish mine and it was extremely difficult. I cannot imagine managing a family, a full-time job and attending college concurrently. I did it, but I didn't want that for them. With one daughter enrolled in grad school and another working toward her Bachelor's degree, I am fascinated by the challenges they face and the work they put into their futures. As my oldest contemplates Notre Dame or Indiana University for her doctorate, I am consistently amazed by the will power and stamina required to complete such an education. Topic: A Committed Self-Brew: opportunity to think through issues or situations that might be brewing. And I guess it would be easy to feel sorry for oneself, given enough wrong self-brew time. One thing I have learned (the hard way) over the years, is that there is no room for self-pity in an active and busy mind. A job can certainly keep you occupied, but that doesn't ensure a happy heart or simple satisfaction. A career, being different than a job, can not only keep you occupied but also fulfilled - especially when the chosen career has become a calling. When we feel a sense of responsibility to our supervisor or co-workers or those whom we serve then there is a tendency to really apply oneself and follow-up and follow-through. I overheard my mom talking to my brother on the phone yesterday. He had called early in the morning to see how her recent surgery had gone and to inquire about her recovery. She was no nonsense about the pain but said that she was feeling better. She rushed the tail-end of the conversation because she needed to get out the door to perform her morning duties as School Crossing Guard employed by the police department. I guess my brother balked and said she should still be resting because my mom answered loud and clear, "There are 500 children depending on me, it is my responsibility to make sure they get to school safely." There was obviously no further discussion as her intentions were non-negotiable. I learned a long time ago to just do what mom wants and agree with what she says - not everything of course, but when it comes to her own life, her own choices, she has a pretty good idea of her own game plan. Her sense of responsibility, her drive to not only fulfill her duties but to do them well, and her need to stay active keep her busy, healthy, and happy. She has been almost hit by stupid drivers, she has been cussed out, she has flipped off multiple times, and she cannot respond with anything, not even a wave. I am sure she adds a smile just to irk the transgressors even further. Yet she still gets out there and performs her duties, despite sickness and the ignorance and utter stupidity of others. If only we couldn't all be as committed to our work and those to whom we serve. What are your duties? Do you get them done in a timely manner? Do you do them with a smile or a drive-by flip off? Do you do them well? Are you where you want to be, doing what you want to do? Topic: Cellulite with a Side of Reality: and spikes. There were hills surrounding my home and my work schedule plus family duties permitted only one time slot for my new physical endeavor. Six AM. Ouch. But I was committed and after a three-month warm-up, I had built my endurance and distance to perfection. Five miles daily. Within nine months, a line appeared down the center of my belly. No exercise in my past had ever created a belly of which I could be proud. Plus, I felt good, I felt accomplished and at only 1.25 hours, there was minimum daily output. Just loss of a bit of sleep but some gained alone time that had diminished significantly with my entrance to motherhood. I liked it and I was proud of my efforts and the visible results. And yes, it did take about nine months… sadly. Enter the four C’s; I love them. I love chocolate. I love cake. I love cookies. I love candy – of almost any kind. And denying me those things I loved only drove me a little insane. By adding my workout, I was able to still enjoy my sweets and maintain some semblance of discernable health. I knew my dimpled thighs would never go away without an invasive surgery of which I wanted no part. So a measure of balance was gained and in the process a certain freedom. During the summer when I was at my physical peak, we had invited family and friends to join us at the river with our “jet skis” whenever possible, whenever we were out. My sister and her young family joined us on one such outing. In prepping to launch the boats and get everyone to the place we would spend the day, there was a bit of walk to the dock where transport and ferrying would take place. I walked ahead, in my cut-off jean shorts and bikini, leading the way. After a few minutes, my sister called to me – “You know, you still have cellulite…” I think my heart and brain stopped at the same time. It hurt. Badly. And that is when it hit me, in my effort to gain balance, I had lost it. I really had cared too deeply about what others thought – or it would not have hurt. I yelled over my shoulder, “I know…” But I hadn’t known and I hadn’t anticipated a call out. Reality slapped me in the face and, in an instant, I felt what I thought was balance draining from my psyche. My fake balance was replaced by truth – which is the best balance of all. Honestly, i like the younger generations but if i thought i had to work in an office all day with all that testosterone and PMS emotion i would cut my antique wrists. I am very patient with young recruiters but i sure get bored fast listening to their crys of anguish and astonisment as they learn the ropes. then have to freaking talk about it for hours like it's something new. See my crabby age is showing. You are correct about fit. The other thing is that some people are older than dirt at 45 and some of us refuse to get old. I took one look at the "old people" at my 50th high school reunion, turned around and left before i heard anything else about their latest surgery or health problem. I mean what do you say when the little blonde twirler from high school (who now looks like RoseAnn Barr on a bad day) looks at you and says, "My God, you have not aged, what have you had done?" Things float around while one is grasping for an age appropriate answer like; " Nothing you fat old hide, have you had a rough life or were you in a bad wreck." "Haven't had anything done, just faster horses, older wine and younger men, what happened to you?" I was not suggesting that the resume of a "moss back" be detailed back to dawn of time. In fact i do the same thing you do with the resume, ask them to just list dates, company and position on those positions that are floating around in the mist of time. I like a resume that has the most detail on the most recent positions unless they are those wonderul things that say Consulting. If someone has been unemployed but doing legitmate consulting then put it on there and just say who for and what they did briefly then give me the big detail and the most column inches of the last full time position or two on page one. Then start to shorten on page two and i don't have a problem with 3 pages on someone who has worked since the mid 70's with the very early jobs being a one liner. I also agree with your take on the transition from very large to much smaller compaines for a senior employee. the biggest problem i see is the Senior executive who has retired from one career and wants to work contract or part time but wants the same hour equivalent rate factored on his last full time executive position. Not happenin in most cases. @Tino All experience is relevant but i truly believe with a senior candidate a lot of experience can be highlighted in a summary on page one. Your background would make one hell of a strong summary that might even serve to have an employer stop right there and just scan the rest of the resume to get a feel for who and when.…; Added by Sandra McCartt at 7:03pm on August 10, 2011
