Topic: Green Light: f while waiting for the light to change. Apparently, it was very important to him that he be the first out of the gate, the first to cross the line at the intersection. He raced down the busy street, weaving in and out of traffic, glassy-eyed and seemingly oblivious to all other cars. While he wanted to be first and must have been in a very big hurry, he arrived no more quickly than I, still having to wait at the next light. His eagerness only garnered dividends in pride. And while I admire a competitive nature, after all that is the basis for capitalism, I do not approve of the Escaladier's lack of respect for other drivers or pedestrians that might get in the way of his quest: to be first to the next light. His raucous music blared and his ride was sweet, but what did it prove? That he had wealth? That he knew how to drive well? That he is a winner? That the guy with the biggest toys wins? More along the lines that he is bossy, unruly, selfish, and not so bright..., like I said, we arrived at the same destination at almost the same time. His behavior did not get him there any faster or esteem him in the eyes of those that witnessed said behavior. What does a competitive nature say about the business you ? If you make wise choices, driving the closure of deals that create long-standing relationships, than it says that you are smart. But if you base decisions on selfish needs or wants and ignore the desires and requirements of those around you, your sense of competition has not improved your business acumen or endeared you to clients or associates. You have indeed separated yourself from the crowd, but from which crowd? How do you measure your achievements in work? If you are competitive, if that is what drives better performance, then be prepared to measure your performance, not just beat those around you or your direct competition. If a victory does fall your way, study why you were victorious, not just simply that you were - that you beat everyone else. But most of all, make sure you understand what a victory would truly look like to you and those around you. Topic: Roots.: , a driveway that my children could skate on and ride bikes up and down, and I craved more than a mere four-inch wall between me and my screaming neighbors. Of course, the home wasn't perfect, but it was just right. And that's saying something. The yard needed some tender, loving care and I was just the mom to give it. The side of the house boasted the ugliest overgrown ice plant (of some sort) I hade ever seen and it took up space that was the perfect spot for the yellow rose bushes I wanted to plant. So, I devised a plan. I would remove the unwanted shrub and plant roses in its stead. Easier said than done. The plant broke apart easily and I could tell it would be a nightware to dig up. After attacking it with a shovel, I decided it might be best to simply pull it out, but it was much too stubborn and heavy for me to accomplish alone. So I evaluated the situation and found a rope. Tying it around the thickest part at the base, I then took the other end and tied it around the loop on the under side of my Sundance. Then I hoped in my car, rev'd the engine a bit and popped it slowly into gear and, like magic, the entire plant, roots and all, jumped right out of the planter and plopped into the middle of the driveway. My plan had worked; due, mostly in part, to a weak root ball and loose soil. It had nothing to do with my genius. A thick foundation doesn't provide needed support unless it is rooted in cause or purpose. Skill must have roots in knowledge and experience in order for it to be strong and valuable. Together, knowledge and experience, bring real value to a skillset, creativity and tolerance bringing value to a mindset. Mindset sits side by side with skillset when it comes to "the root," the cause or purpose. My new house, interestingly enough, has three major ice plant bushes - exactly like the one from twenty years ago - on a side of my driveway. My experience told me how to remove them but it didn't account for stronger roots and dry, compacted soil. The rope tied about the base merely sliced the plant off, decapitating it at its ten-inch diameter base. Topic: How to use your Elevator Pitch in an interview: e Elevator Pitch The elevator pitch is the topic of Barbara Rose's recent Dallas Morning News article, Learn to Sell Yourself in 60 Seconds. The elevator pitch is a quick and effective way of establishing credibility when introducing yourself. While many people develop well-crafted introductions for networking meetings, they don't realize their pitch can also be a powerful interviewing tool. Tell Me About Yourself Often, the first interview question asked is, "Tell me about yourself." My own "research" - having interviewed over 3,000 people face to face - indicates an overwhelming number of people have difficulty conveying their value proposition in less than a minute. Typically, they hit on a dozen different points in the resume without connecting the dots. Some try to hurry through their whole resume. Both of these are self-defeating because you loose the interviewer and more importantly - the job. Getting it Right Sharing your 60-second elevator pitch is the perfect strategy to answering the tell-me-about-yourself question. In a minute or less, you provide meaningful information that sets the stage for the balance of the interview. No rambling, no specific details. Just a clear snap shot of who you are and how you are different from the other three candidates competing for the same position. One of the article's contributors, Mary Civiello, provides a three-step strategy to develop an engaging introduction: 1. Say who you are 2. Say what you do 3. Say why you do it better When you are developing your introduction, Rose suggests avoiding generalities like, "I enjoy helping people." General statements are weak and they have no impact. They do not stick. "Helping people" is a concept that needs flushing out. A specific example to illustrate how you have helped people will drive home the point. Sharing you had the highest customer service rating scores in three of the last four quarters will catch their attention and help solidify you as the "expert." It is punchy and it sticks. The hiring manager is anxious to hear more. Take time to craft your three-stage presentation. You'll want to practice aloud to work out the bugs and make sure you are staying under the minute mark. The Payoff Delivering concise, high impact stories that "combine a picture with your words...doubles the amount of time people remember you." This is critical, because once you leave the interview there are dozens of distractions to blur their impression of you. Here are two examples from the article: A woman shares that she is a versatile customer service and operations professional whose travels through 48 states gave her valuable experience with diverse people. A financial controller who loves the game of golf compared his precision and follow-through of his golf swing to the diligence and thoroughness he brings to his professional work. Your initial introduction is an excellent way to grab their attention. Then throughout the interview, share a handful of well-crafted success stories that will help them remember you and the value you will add to their organization.
