Topic: Moments of Definition: oment or one day. They usually occur during memorable or important occasions. The birth of a baby, the death of a parent, a new job, or a family tragedy. Though growth and change are not limited to occurring after something as great as the things mentioned, sometimes, just an action by someone you admired or a harsh word from a colleague may be enough to spawn definition. I have experienced the death of a parent. It is such a strange thing - so much that you hang on to becomes unimportant in a flash. I have experienced the birth of a child, four times over and each child is completely different, what I share with each is different. It has been awesome to watch them each mature and grow into teenagers and adults. They each impress me so much, what more could a parent want? I have also experienced a miscarriage and the sorrow it brings - defining, to be sure. Something I never thought I would fully experience, as an adult anyway, was my country at war. I just never thought that the world had not evolved past this way of not solving differences or issues. It seems surreal, really, to think that there are guns in young soldiers' arms right now. I have quit a job I loved at a moment's notice. It was a matter of principle and yet, I was devastated. But that defining, life-changing moment was necessary and one of the best things that could ever have happened to me. With that change, I moved from executive, retained search to in-house, corporate recruitment and the world of business operations opened up to me. I was inspired to alter my major and complete my degree in business; with which I fell completely in love. I have since worked as a contract recruiter, been a search consultant and now, lovingly reside on the vendor side of the recruiting industry, where I have still had the opportunity to manage in-house recruitment. They are not always moments we wish for, but they are, usually, what we need and most definitely what shape who we are. How we got here is important but isn't who we are when we finally arrive more so? I shudder to think where I would be and what I would be doing had I not had four babies or had I not quit that job. I cannot imagine still having a mullet (yes, I had one) or wearing a corduroy suit (yes, I had one of those too). I cannot imagine the fax machine being the latest and greatest tech or recording a voice greeting on a tape recorder answering machine. I would like to think that we improve as we move away from the mullet and, hopefully, war. I would like to think that "the better way" is not a dream or a sin. I would like to believe that the evolution of new technology and new attitudes will continue the creation and progression of "where we live." I have heard it said, "to each his own." Total and complete B.S - and it is That B.S that got us here in this mess in the first place. Companies Like Microsoft will continue to Abuse the system of H1-B visas Not because there is a war for talent, but because of the need for cheap labor. Now in Reality it is the Allocation of bring Cheap Labor to America that Will be the death of the American Sourcer, and even the foreign sourcer, as it will take recruiting to bridge that gap as well. Karen, I have to agree with you. The war for talent is a war for the cheapest talent. The way companies have learned to circumvent the government laws, are coached to write up job descriptions so as to play to foreign resumes of cheap labor deliberately excluding higher paid Americans, and then cry over a lack of qualified workers pleading to raise the H-1B caps has been transparent to I/T recruiters. I won't get into the L-1 Intercompany Transfer abuses I've run into. As for retirement......maybe Recruiters who aren't married, don't have kids, have professional dual income marriages, got out of the Stock Market early September, and therefore have much lower cost of living expenses or need for serious income have done well enough to be able to retire. As for me, I'm 56 with two currently in college with expenses incurred/accumulated supporting them looking forward into the corporate employment paradigm shifts to outsourced cheap labor overseas, insourced cheap labor here, and corporations likely beginning to move their corporate operations overseas to their future revenue streams (Asia/India) as did Haliburton to the Middle East my bet is I'm working as a recruiter as long as there's a need for us to find passive candidates and I still have my full capacities. IMO, Both political parties in different ways with different philosophies are working towards the same end result--fewer jobs in the US. GOP with Free Market Capitalism encouraging the corporate trading of US jobs for corporate profit and personal wealth........the Democrats with a communist bent taxing and regulating companies and achievers out of existence. Some of the clasiest dressers in the world of work dress like high fashion models. Better to have said, don't dress like you are on the way to the bar and don't want to change clothes. But then maybe i know a different kind of "model" than you do. Better to have said, Don't dress like a frump. Now women understand frump and they don't like being frumpy. Tell a mature woman to dress her age and you just pissed off half the women in America because you mentioned two things that women get insulted about fast. Age and being told how to dress. Do you have a death wish? Most women in the workplace spend a lot of money on their clothes, they dress depending on their mood a lot of times and they like compliments like, "You look very nice today". Unless of course they are red eyed femminists who get pissed off if a male co worker does't drop his eyes and take two steps back before he says , "Good Morning". Oh and by the way, as a writer you might want to take a look at that one sentence where your grammar went off the rails a bit. I think it is "had seen" and not "had saw". Now as to equality, i hope to heaven men and women are never treated as total equals. I can not imagine wanting to sit around, scratch my nether region and tell sports stories. Albeit i can empathize with the guys when they starting bitching about their last property settlement. Go figure, maybe it was the way i dressed. In line with that i might suggest that you focus writing sports anaolgies unless of course you think all women should dress alike in little uniforms, with sensible shoes and white little blouses. If this old gal dressed her age i would be wearing support hose and a mumu. So thanks for the advice but i think i will stay on the model track. My four to five inch heels will make a grown man cry and the animal print causes barking at the moon. Now all you guys go find some Kaki's and blue shirts. Buy five of each so you don't have to make a decision, nobody will know how old you are and the dress code thinks you are part of the janitorial crew. Topic: Want to learn something? Then SHUT UP AND LISTEN!: wn, we go on to forget half of what we heard. Pretty shocking statistics if you’re someone who is client facing wouldn’t you say?Here’s how, even though I didn't realise it at the time, I learned to shut up and listen.At the start of my career I got a job working in the advertising department of a well-known national newspaper. My job, as a ‘Tele-Ad Receptionist’, to give it its full title, was to take calls from customers across each one of the newspaper's advertising classifications. That meant everything from recruitment to motors to travel to property and back again. It even included the personal column and the births, marriages and deaths section.“Great”, I hear you cry. “But why is he boring us with the story”? I’ll tell you. That last category, Births, Marriages and Deaths, may sound a bit dull, but it recently dawned on me that an incident that happened one day whilst taking copy over the phone over twenty years ago actually taught me one of the most important lessons in business there is. And that is - knowing when to shut up and listen.During my time there, I often took calls from the recently bereaved, phoning up to place an announcement about their dear departed loved one. Tough as it was hearing them sob their hearts out, you got used to pausing, assuring them that it was OK to cry and telling them they should take their time, sometimes even offering to phone them back. It was the same for the ‘in memoriams’ – the announcements acknowledging an anniversary of a death. Many people still shed tears even years after their loss when reading their messages out over the phone, but again, as sad as it was, you just had to deal with it as sensitively yet professionally as possible.Where I nearly slipped up however, was the day someone phoned through a birth announcement. Whenever we hear news of a birth it’s only natural to say ‘congratulations’, but on this particular day, I was glad that I used all of my listening skills, and not just 25% of them.The man on the other end of the phone started to read out his announcement (I’ve changed the details but here’s how it would have read were it today) “Smith. On 23rd February 2010 to John and Jane, at the local hospital, Anytown, a baby boy, Paul”. Now, hands up, who wouldn’t be tempted to say ‘congratulations’ at that point? However, after a brief pause, presumably whilst he summoned up the courage to utter the words, he then added “…who sadly died 3 hours later”.OK, it does perhaps raise the question of why he wanted to announce that. Maybe he felt it would be easier for people to read about it rather than him have to go through the whole story time after time over the phone or in person. I don’t know. What I do know is that by listening rather than assuming and than instinctively reacting, I saved myself a great deal of embarrassment. The moment has stuck with me ever since, not least as the man in question was, and still is, to a lesser extent, in the public eye. It also dawned on me years later that that job gave me a skill I don’t even realise I am using half the time, and that is the ability to listen attentively, not selectively. It taught me a vital lesson that has stayed with me - never assume you know it all or take anything for granted.So, the next time you’re on the way to a client meeting, ask yourself, when it comes to business, are you focussed? Are you truly making the most of your listening skills?
