Will Executive management be biased when hiring an HR leader for their organization? ******************************************************************************************** Female recruiters better at salary negotiation- www.Recruitmenttimes.com article Female recruiters are better at negotiating their salaries - that’s according to a snapshot poll undertaken by Perriam & Everett, the consultancy which places recruiters, resourcers and headhunters worldwide. The poll asked owner - managers and directors of recruitment consultancies a number of questions regarding gender differences within their organisation. Most organisations (98%) said that the top performers in their organisations were pretty evenly split between men and women. There was also a healthy percentage of women in top jobs with over three quarters of respondents ( 78%) saying that half or more of their senior roles were held by females. One national finance recruiter said that four out of five of its regional directors were women. Interestingly, almost two thirds (64%) of respondents said that women were better at negotiating their salaries then men. “Men tend to focus more on the money they have earned in fees while women are better at using their softer skills to show how they add value more holistically through leadership, mentoring, and problem solving or customer service” said one respondent. “I find that often, women tend to drill down much more quickly to what they have actually achieved and, importantly what else they have contributed - while sometimes men concentrate solely on hard targets and numbers,” said another respondent “It’s these ‘softer’ skills that can really make a difference to an organisation’s bottom line”, says Aisling Tighe, Managing Director of Perriam & Everett. “Evidence of a link between profitability and women at the top is growing. Recent research from McKinsey & Co found that European companies with the highest proportion of women in influential leadership roles do better than their sector average in terms of return on equity, operating results and share price growth. Before us sat dim sum, spare ribs and egg rolls And four different soups, in ornately huge bowls. The courses kept coming, from spicy to mild, And higher and higher toward the ceiling were piled. So much piled up, one dish after the other, My girlfriend and I couldn't see one another! Now we sat there, we two, without proper utensils, While they handed us something that looked like two pencils. We ate till we couldn't and drank down our teas And barely had room for our fortune cookies. But my fortune was perfect; it summed up the mood When it said "Even if it was kosher, it was still Chinese food!." But my girlfriend, well - she got a real winner; Her’s said "Your companion will pay for the dinner." Our bellies were full and at last it was time To travel back home and write some bad rhyme Of our Chinatown trek (and to privately speak About trying to refine our chopstick technique). Comment on: Blog Post 'Why Men Earn More than Women': place. There is a shadow that the people in power allow to exist that presents as you stated "obstacles" for women to compete with their male counterparts. I agree with that. The Glass Ceiling is mentioned in some of my comments related to the old boys club I see ever present in my dealings with government work. People hire their friends, former peers, etc and place them in positions of authority. They play golf, drink, etc together and maintain a barrier that is difficult to penetrate. I have no insensitivity to the fact that women have to endure a harder working path to reach a seat at the table then men. Thee comment of Do not give up is in direct relation to my thoughts that too many do. Their is hope, and yes the cards are stacked against them, but encouragement does need to be made not as males being better, but simply coming from a position of power - those of us that can make a difference are required to encourage those that might be discouraged in their efforts. I understand the emergent majority of new entrants are women? However are you aware of the reasons and more importantly the statistical benefits that polls like Gallop and others point out that essentially encourage the disparity. The majority of new entrants in the past 3 yrs have been non working spouses that have entered for the first time or re-entered the workforce due to their spouse losing a position or making less money than before. Simple truth. With that being said, companies are well aware of the facts and what is going on - leveraging those aspects in their negotiations and paying women (especially ones returning to the workforce) less in an effort to get work done at reduced cost. The fact that polls show women entering the workforce for this reason is simply ammunition for companies to use when offering positions. Men browbeating - I think you need to read my comments more closely. That was not what was said. My observation is that women seem to accept easier than men do during the negotiation stage. There are a variety of reasons for that, specific for each case. And for the sake of comparison - lets look at this. Nancy mentioned that maybe men have held the power too long. Consider this, the top 1% of the country holds 35% of the wealth. With the top 20% holding 80% of the national wealth. The people that country the money, control the power as Nancy put it, make the decisions. In 2011, there were only 99 female billionaires out of 1125 worldwide. More importantly, only 10 are self made. My mom did her Rosie the Riveter stint during WWII, raised twelve hellions to maturity and success and could ride a horse as good or better than her five brothers--true cowboys of old on cattle drives from Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. Like you, my mother and many, many others--there is a merit system that lets cream rise to the top. Yet, there is also a system that ensures a Glass Ceiling and less than equal pay as well. Women bawl in the office when they get upset. I supervised an office full of women for years. I would stick needles in my eyes before i would do it again. High maintenance, whiney, petty, moody backstabbing bunch of "i have to leave early today because of blah, blah. Always worried about what somebody else makes or how much work somebody else is or is not doing compared to them. When i hired a team of guys it was a new world of get the job done no matter what it takes ,come early stay late . Everytime i get a call about an office that is having problems with a manager i know within three minutes if the office manager is a woman or man. If it's a woman the first thing said is that everybody bickers all the time and the manager gets too involved with all the petty crap. If it's a man the first thing said is that everybody thinks they should make as much money as their manager and are always coming to the top to gripe about it. When women start acting like functioning adults, ask what needs to be done and when and quit talking about babies and weddings and needing extra time off and turning on the waterfall, they will be paid as much as men. Not likely to happen anytime soon. If you have ever worked in an office of any size you know exactly what i am talking about. :) I got to be a female, male chauvinist pig by working with a bunch of women.
