As an example, our company had an opening for a Front-End Developer, where demand exceeds supply. After conducting extensive search, we found an excellent candidate with hands-on experience and skills aligned to the job requirements . After the offer had been extended, the potential employee presented to HR her concern of poor credit history which , in essence, was the result of poor financial planning of her former spouse. Since her programming skills were exceptional , HR overlooked the credit history and she went on to be an invaluable part of the team receiving accolades for her work. When we tie this to the online radio movement (Bill now does 3 shows on Mondays, for the Down Under, UK and US audiences), blogging and tweeting, we are reaching more people than ever before. The ERE event yesterday consistently had in excess of 300 viewers on its own USTREAM link; it would be interesting to know how many watched on other sites like Recruiting Blogs, Peer Goudschmidt in Holland, and on our stream on RCEuro.com (unfortunately I can's seem to figure that out yet). The article was hit piece about the "truth about recruiting agencies", which you don't like and that is the essence of the article. Ten years is a lot of time out of one's life to dedicate to a profession and you should be commended, I commend you. I have been working in the search business for 30 years mind you the bulk in legal search for 20 plus years. Legal search and Commercial are similar in cultivating clients and candidates, that want to work with recruiters. The nuances are different but all recruiters, contingency, retained, etc. are all in this business to make a living on a long term basis. Comment on: Blog Post 'Maybe those brainless single-celled blobs have it right after all...': rocesses and the applicability of certain ideas and time tested recruiting principles to every situation. This idea of being open with candidates and requesting their commitment to working with a fluid 'needs discovery' and engagement process, once you've been able to convince them that the position and the effort you're putting behind it is real and not just a waste of their time investment, is actually pretty useful if you're lucky to be working with professionals who appreciate your time and effort and are interested in building a solid rapport and working relationship with professionals like yourself. The world is not perfect and as much as we'd like for each position to be filled with minimal disruptions to the magical recruiting workflow, the realization that we're more effective when we're adapting to the needs of the client or just the specific opportunity, is immensely rewarding. It helps when you're able to pull off that extra sweetened deal from the hiring manager for going out of your way to work with his or her process too. And there is truth to your spin on the laws you mentioned, or failed to elaborate on--as they can relate to recruitment. That said, don't get stuck in the '80s because, it follows that your penchant for, and attraction to, bad cinema may bring fourth what we in recruitment can learn from the goings-on in a movie like: Rhinestone (1984):starring Sylvester Stallone & Dolly Parton. Tagline: "A rip roaring, hard lovin' comedy hit with wonderful new songs..." with Sly actually singing in a few songs. If such a blog post came forth from you--it could put you in grave danger.
