Comment on: Topic 'Every Time a Bell Rings...': nd never sitting still for 2 minutes. Always wanting and looking for more never satisfied with what I accomplished. About 4 years ago I had a moment in my life like you described in your post. Not the type of illness but the moment when you realize that life has an end and no one is above that. A time when you sit down and say to yourself Wow I am on this roller coast ride called life and at some point I as well as everyone has to get off. I have spent every day since then spending less time worrying about the things in life you cannot change and more time trying to change the things you can. I have made a point to make time for family and friends which should be everyone’s first priority. Thankfully my situation was quickly diagnosed and treated by some great doctors. I hope that your friend gets well soon and is back home with his family, enjoying life for all its good times and sometimes not so good times. I stopped watching the news several years ago - as I got totally fed up with the amount of fear inducing stories they insist on putting in front of us. The same can be said about newspapers, and radio news. Whenever I'm in the car, and the news comes on the radio - it's always the same... 99% of it is always about negative stories - killings, rapes, assaults, spending cuts, job cuts, illness, disease and so on... It's all total propoganda, and when you get caught up in it, I wouldn't blame you for feeling depressed every day! Just as Sunjay says... you make your own reality. You can either continue to live your life on edge, or get up and decide to forget all the crap that the media are trying to force at you - and just focus on making your own life as fulfilling as possible! My friends, family and local community are what matter most to me. Topic: The One that Counts: financial hardship story but can you imagine having a child diagnosed with cancer? Taking time away from your job (perhaps losing your job) to care for your child and then somehow having to still pay your mortgage or rent, your electricity bill or simply purchase regular household items? My friend Marcus runs an organization called Faith's Hope. Marcus has his own family and has faced his own share of financial trials resultant of a very sick daughter with Down's Syndrome, who has also faced multiple surgeries to correct abnormalities in her heart. His daughter, Faith, will be ten years old in six more "wake-ups." That is what Marcus and his family call "days," so his other young children and Faith understand the concept of tomorrow or the day after tomorrow and so on. Faith's young life has been plagued with doctor's visits and hospital stays but the joy in her face is undeniable. It is because of Faith and the mission Marcus and his wife feel they have been called to that they give back - full time. They feel they have no choice. The compellation to do so courses through their veins and they somehow find a way to make their own ends meet while helping several hundred other families over the last several years. Last Fall, Marcus asked for my help in setting up their social media so that they could possibly reach others that could give support, either in time or finances. How could I refuse? I faced my own medical catastrophe when my second daughter was born three months early (at 26 weeks gestation). She weighed 2 lbs. 5 ozs. and struggled to live for the first six weeks of her life. After 89 days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, she was released to our care and came home about seven days before her due date. In other words, she was due on May 18th, but she was born on February 20th and came home on May 11th. Her name is Renee and this last February, she celebrated her 21st birthday. Aside from a little asthma, she is perfectly healthy. But we had to sell everything in order to survive financially, including our home. Giving back isn't always easy to do. Some of us are more compelled than others. When you can, when it makes a difference: give. It doesn't have to be today or tomorrow and perhaps giving to your own family is what you can do. I often feel I can never give enough to really make a difference. Comment on: Topic 'Another Lesson': thing can be taken away in an instant by illness, accidents, suicide of a loved one, the loss of a job and a home, and the list goes on. It is never expected and no one is immune. Catastrophe has no bias and can hit the happy, the rich and the secure. If you've lived through loss and if your life has crashed down around you, it makes you treasure the good times even more. I just wrote a post of how thankful I am to have a happy family. That is now. It hasn't always been this way. In the past I have needed the help of a community more than once. I always thought I was strong enough to handle my life on my own. How arrogant to think I was stronger than the tragedies that lurked around my happy corner. There are some things you just can’t do alone. When you experience the impact it has when selfless people put their own lives aside for a time in order to help someone else, it changes you. It is not possible to truly enjoy your good fortune unless you share yourself and your possessions to help people in need. If you don't have the possessions to share, your time is as much or more valuable. If you are in a good place now, share it with someone else. If you need someone now please reach out.
