Comment on: Blog Post 'The champion without the championship mindset': ctually achieved something significant in order to be considered a champion. Now having the “championship mindset” as you put it, may have played a role in one’s success, nevertheless, you’re not a champion based on wanting to be one regardless of how powerful your championship mindset is. You’re a champion based on accomplishments, some of which are rewarded with trophies, medals, promotions, etc., essentially recognition of high achievement, particularly at the championship level. While I understand the point you’re trying to make about having the right “championship mindset” to come out on the winning side—what I don’t understand is your insensitivity to a true high achiever in Federer who simply didn’t win on the day you happened to be in your spectator seat making flip comments about him being humiliated and his valueless trophies. You seem fairly dismissive of high achievement and somehow feel all champions can rally all the time, but when they don’t they must have lost their “championship mindset”. My guess is the Federer’s championship mindset was kicked into higher gear as he began to lose, but it turned out not to be his day. Sh#t happens…even Federer can lose. So I wouldn’t be so quick to assume that athletes or business professionals are somehow lacking a championship mindset if they don’t pull off the win at a certain place or time. Sometimes the ball just doesn’t go where it was intended to go regardless of where your mindset is—and there is always tomorrow for another go at the competition. And if it were just a matter of WILL well the way you talk you should be king of the world by now. While WILL/attitude does have value it must have hard WORK and preparedness behind it to make your next best effort. Who knows how jet lag, bad cheese, no sleep or a combination of these and other factors didn’t undermine Federer that day. Where am I coming from? I’ve won and lost national and world competitions by inches in Masters and Senior Olympic Track & Field competitions. When I’ve lost, I was not humiliated in the least because I know I gave it my best shot. I simply didn’t win that day. And when I did/do win I get a medal or a trophy because I was/am the best at that particular place in time and that has value for me…competing and earning little and big victories. Or in business, getting little, big or multiple job placements as a recruiter. And as for having a championship mindset, I have that all the time—as I suspect most athletes and working professionals do as well--win or lose…and I have the wins, trophies, medals, promotions, bonuses and scar tissue to prove it as do most competitors. So, Navid—being a champion says a lot about past achievement. And how many wins, trophies, medals, promotions, bonuses, or simple “thank yous” actually do matter because it says something about results and appreciation for those results. My mom did her Rosie the Riveter stint during WWII, raised twelve hellions to maturity and success and could ride a horse as good or better than her five brothers--true cowboys of old on cattle drives from Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. Like you, my mother and many, many others--there is a merit system that lets cream rise to the top. Yet, there is also a system that ensures a Glass Ceiling and less than equal pay as well. Women bawl in the office when they get upset. I supervised an office full of women for years. I would stick needles in my eyes before i would do it again. High maintenance, whiney, petty, moody backstabbing bunch of "i have to leave early today because of blah, blah. Always worried about what somebody else makes or how much work somebody else is or is not doing compared to them. When i hired a team of guys it was a new world of get the job done no matter what it takes ,come early stay late . Everytime i get a call about an office that is having problems with a manager i know within three minutes if the office manager is a woman or man. If it's a woman the first thing said is that everybody bickers all the time and the manager gets too involved with all the petty crap. If it's a man the first thing said is that everybody thinks they should make as much money as their manager and are always coming to the top to gripe about it. When women start acting like functioning adults, ask what needs to be done and when and quit talking about babies and weddings and needing extra time off and turning on the waterfall, they will be paid as much as men. Not likely to happen anytime soon. If you have ever worked in an office of any size you know exactly what i am talking about. :) I got to be a female, male chauvinist pig by working with a bunch of women. Topic: Zigged When I Should Have Zagged: every team on which you have ever been. What was the one requirement for success? That each party shares information or strategy with the other. One of my favorite pastimes is local theater..., not attending, though I do love to attend, but rather directing or acting. It is something I have participated in since I was very young. A few years back, I was directing a full-length play that required a severe set change during the fifteen minute intermission between Act I and II. Several cast members, my assistant director David, and I had to move in precision in order to achieve the changes in a timely manner. We had practiced several times and knew exactly what we needed to do. Opening night went off without a hitch, as did several shows that followed. With a four-week run, there was plenty of time to perfect the scene change, which we did. As a matter of fact, as shows went on, we were able to shave time and actually have a few minutes to spare. This was imperative for the actors that helped, as they were appreciative of the extra time to either rest or focus between acts. By about the third weekend, we moved with such exactness that we rarely spoke. And this is where our problem occurred. Each set piece was on rollers and could be moved and turned and then locked into place. There was one piece that had a lock at the top and at the bottom, David would unlock one, then I would unlock the other and then simultaneously we would move the pieces. Unfortunately, during one matinee, that is not how it worked. I zigged, but David thought I was zagging and because I didn't tell him I was zigging, he was zigging too but, unfortunately, the top of his head ended up zigging my top teeth through my lower lip. It was about this time that I wished I had stuck with zagging. As the blood filled my mouth and poured onto the floor, I knew there had been a gap in communication. I assured David that I was ok as cold compresses were applied and we finished the task at hand. After I made sure all was well, set pieces were locked into place, and the second act had commenced, I proceeded to the bathroom to survey the damage. It was considerable and I knew a trip to the emergency room was in order. I let the house manager know that I had to leave and asked her to make sure that she told David and my cast that all was well. I drove myself to the hospital. I sat in the ER with ice and towels held against my face; I knew where I had failed and my lesson had been learned. This was a clear case of not talking to my team. Luckily, three stitches took care of the minor damage and the scar on the inside of my lip is a consistent reminder to always strive to communicate. Some lessons are harder learned than others. If i come back to the site in a a few hours or that evening when the press of the day is over and i have to dig for the damn thing because there has been a shit storm of worthless marketing turds dumped on the site, it stinks and i;'m gone. Nor am i going to attempt to write anything that might offer some real world recruiting info and dump it into a sewer of half baked, copied, ignorant junk written by some stupid kid who doesn't know squat about recruiting so tries to use a few buzz words like "the war on talent" to try and sell some ridiculous technology that will eliminate reading a resume, seek out lies (what a freaking joke) and make every hire permanent to the gold watch. While i am empathetic as to anyone who has survived the big C. Do i want to see a pic of your damn belly scars and hear about how many times you puke a day on a recruiting site. I have a hell of a hysterectomy scar but somehow it doesn't seem related to recruiting nor do i find it appropriate to post a pic of it and talk about my innards. Gawd! If you want content that means anything don't expect readers to dig through the garbage to find a treasure to comment on. Get rid of the garbage. As in reach right up there and delete these four stupid blogs and clean it up. If the good stuff sits there for a day or two it will have more exposure than being covered up or rolled down the pipe. We are not just trolling. In a very strong way, most of us who have been around on this site for years would love to see it return to the value we felt it had in the past where marketing posts were deleted. We coached many a young or newbie recruiter looking for help or support because they didn't come on here writing something to hear their head rattle. There were marketers who came on and asked questions about what we liked and didn't like, what we do and how we do it instead of trying to tell us that they had a miracle app that would take care of every problem or challenge we ever had as well as make all candidates honest while wiping the mustard off our chins at the same time. It boils down to do you want to fill up bandwith or do you want a site that is actually recruiters talking about recruiting. If you want a rolling billboard, you've got it. If not reach up there and delete all four of these claptrap stupid posts and make room for real content. We really shouldn't have to "troll" this stuff to death or send it to the popular list because it's outrageously ignorant and obvious advertising for junk. THE END In my opinon it would be a billion times better to have "real recruiting content" sit there for a day or two rather than have a rolling billboard of marketing junk that covers up or knocks decent content into the hinterlands.
