Kurt Vonnegut - One of my favorite authors. He had an uncanny way of describing harsh reality with satire.
I was just talking about him a couple of weeks ago! I had read "Mother night" for the 1st itme, and asked my 23 yeat old son if he would like to read it. He did not know who Kurt Vonnegut was - I relaized so many of the books I grew up reading had never made it with me when I moved out on my own. So I sent him a link to Vonnegut's books, and told him which I considered "favorites", and will be ordering some for his birthday in July. I recommended he start with "Breakfast of Champions", God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater", and "Cat's Cradle".
@Amber--good to hear you've read Kurt Vonnegut and are recommending him as an author worth reading to your son.
Besides his writings--I was impressed with his life experiences (survived the experience of WWII combat and being a German POW) and his inspiring and mentoring of young writers throughout his long life). He was one of a kind in many respects...many compare him to the modern version of Mark Twain.
I like:
“Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It’s round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you’ve got about a hundred years here. There’s only one rule that I know of, babies — ‘God damn it, you’ve got to be kind.’ ”
And.."Pretend to be good always, and even God will be fooled."
...among so many other things he said in his novels.
I bought my 17 yr old daughter this book for Christmas! It came out about a week after she was moaning about the lack of Vonnegut bios and I was able to sneak it into her gifts. She loved it - great author and according to my kid a great bio!
Great gift, Amy--
Vonnegut's bio is a keeper.
