A long time ago – say, in the early 1990s – employers had a very good
idea where their job candidates originated. Most came from ‘word of
mouth’ and the rest via newspaper ads.
Not so today. In a world
where candidates can discover jobs via Twitter,
job
boards,
social
networks,…

A recurrent theme in blog posts and Tweets is that job boards are dying. Usually this is coupled with a prediction that they’ll be replaced by social media or Google. The popularity of this subject, in turn, spawns two questions:
- Why is this such a popular topic?
- Are job boards really dying?
Why is this such a popular topic?… Continue

February's online recruiting news roundup is live.
I'd say the biggest news this time is not in print. The big news is that job boards are getting busier and our revenue is stable or growing. Usually, we have a better sense for where the economy is going than the economists, so I'd say look for positive news coming out in the next couple months.

Does social media eliminate the need for job boards?
For the past 15 years,
job boards have been a standard part of the job seeker and employer ‘tool kit’. And why not?: job boards have proved to be an efficient way for job seekers to locate hiring companies, apply for jobs, and get a resume in front of potential employers.
But now the onset of…

As devastating as this recession has been for the laid-off and unemployed, it has also been a
gut wrenching experience for many small business owners (recruiters) including the author. American entrepreneurs have learned some hard lessons that won't be forgotten. When I say the entire American business landscape has changed, it's because small business is not actually small. Just have a look at these…

We took on the subject of paid job sites this month at OnlineRecruitingNews.com:
From the start of job boards in the mid 1990s until now, the vast majority of job and career sites have worked on a simple economic model: job seekers don’t pay, employers do. In fact, the concept
of free access to a job site’s listings was so ingrained that…

An HR blogger said something interesting in a
recent job boards-are-dying type post: "
We will be job board free in 2 years." In a follow-up post to explain how this would occur, this anonymous blogger says (problem areas in red):
"When you need something, you go to Google, so why not use it to find a job? Simply enter your criteria, say sales…

As the recession begins to wane, it’s a good time to assess what effects it has had on the relationship between employers and employees. Why? These changes will continue to reverberate over the coming years and affect how recruiting and hiring is conducted, what technologies and approaches are…

We've just been through a brutal economic storm. If you were sheltered, great - good for you.
But pay attention anyway, because this storm wreaked havoc on many of the people you'll meet in the next stages of your career. You are going to meet and work with a lot of people who've been burned. So many that the American business landscape is never going to look the same again.
At the height of the crisis, large companies fired thousands of employees to preserve profits. In many…

A year ago, I launched InternetRecruiting.us as a job board directory and invited job boards to join and post news. It was an interesting experiment but didn't really move me. So, I'm remaking the website with a new purpose and a new domain. So
onlinerecruitingnews.com will be a coop of 50 dues paying job boards who want to increase their visibility. Whether or not you want to become a coop member, you'll still be welcome to…

I spend the first 45 minutes of every day reading blogs and forum. It's healthy to read lots of different viewpoints and have a good picture of what's happening around us. But, it's also easy to learn the wrong things from the "experts". Years ago, there seem to be a consensus that reciprocal links no longer worked.
As a result, we abandoned the practice. The real lesson we should have learned was this -- reciprocal links became less effective, but so what? They were still a…

Anxiety is a natural consequence of everything happening around us today. But is anxiety or fear helpful? If they are on display in your next job interview or for your team at work, they are likely to cause you to stumble badly.
How do you keep it from hurting your performance?
Here's
what I've learned about anxiety and how to make it work for me instead of fighting it.

Founded in 1998, SalesTrax caught my attention with its December '07 announcement that job postings would henceforth be free -- unusual for a top-ranked job board. You can find their job posting policies and pricing here. SalesTrax is based in the Kansas City area and offers "a comprehensive array of Internet services, nationwide career fairs, and direct placement services". I wanted to find out from Gary how offering free job postings has worked out and I think you will…

Our two 800-pound gorillas are not the only ones launching job boards. It seems everyone and their brother has one now.
Even Microsoft is at it with TaskMarket.com, a marketplace for buyers and suppliers of business services (under $500).
