Sitting on my shelf collecting dust bunnies since last fall, I finally decided to pick up and open the book Talent is Overrated by Geoff Colvin.

What suddenly…

I’m a Start-Up, and I Need to Start Hiring… Now What?

What is going to make your business grow? Hiring the right people. What is the most important asset to your organization? Hiring the right people. How are you going to meet your business objectives? Hiring the right people. Yet most organizations don’t take the time to really think about how, who, or when they are going to attract people to their organization.

For some reason, hiring is very reactive, and this puts…

What's in a job title... a lot!

This week in my blog roll I came across a blog titled “Job Titles Matter” written by Laurie Ruettimann of Cynical Girl, a blog that I read everyday. It was right on point that job title’s do matter to candidates and are critical to the recruiting…

‘Managing Forward’ Series Part I: Advice on Managing Young Professionals

I had a great student job when I was in college.  I had the pleasure of working in the SUNY Geneseo College Student Union and working for a great mentor, Chip Matthews, Union Director.  I often lean on the learnings and advice I received from Chip, and wanted to know how he was doing since I left (I am sure the place is falling down without me!).  I had the opportunity to sit down and discuss the topic of managing college students with Chip Matthews.  What…

The Value of a Relationship Interview

There are many different types of interviewing styles hiring mangers leverage to determine if a person is the right candidate for the job.

I was sitting pool side with my sister in law who just has a beautiful understanding of the English language. We were talking about interviews and how they sometimes don’t undercover what we need to detect to make the right decision. She used the word…

The Little Things Mean A lot....

My husband has a saying that he hears often at his company, “Let’s not try to boil the ocean!” We often try, and fail, to do too much. We often try, while attempting to reach our goals, to focus on doing everything right. In reality, that is just not possible or wise. Focusing on two or three things and doing them extraordinarily well is often the best way to solve any problem.

We just had our annual super bowl party at our house. As I was listening to all my friends I heard a common…

Talent Scouts: Not Just for Saturdays Anymore!

In keeping with the football theme from last week’s post, not only did I marry a man who loves football, my Father also has a tremendous love of the game. My Dad played for the mighty undefeated Marcellus Mustangs in a suburb of Syracuse, NY in 1963. I can’t tell you how many stories I’ve heard about that team or how certain aspects of how that high school senior year season impacts my dad’s life. Since my dad grew up in the Syracuse area and went to… Continue

Are You Ready For Some Football?

As a full fledged football widow, I hear those words screamed by Hank Williams Jr and my husband every Monday night during the season. Married to a dedicated Buffalo Bills fan, football is religion and our weekend activities are planned around what games are on TV. It’s a phenomenon that I do not really appreciate, and count down the weeks to our freedom. What I do appreciate is the amount of time and energy coaches and the players put forth in preparation for a game from week to… Continue

Recruitfest’09

This week I traveled to Toronto for the second time within a week. First was to see U2 – totally awesome concert! It is a beautiful City fairly close to Upstate NY. I normally do not attend conferences, but learned of Recruitfest from Twitter. Then in having conversations with @jennydevaughn – she encouraged me to go, so I thought I would give it a try!

This was an “unconference,” described as an open forum to exchange thoughts and ideas with fellow peers and thought leaders within the… Continue

Social Networking - My Two Cents

Everywhere I turn nowadays there are articles about social networking: passing fad or here to stay? In my humble opinion it is definitely here to stay. So much so, in fact, that I cannot picture my work environment without it. I am aware that its impact on the recruiting industry is much deeper than others. For example, a friend of mine works for an information services firm that was ready to fire one of their associates for blogging about their products and services without getting legal’s… Continue

Networking Networking Networking

Take a moment to think about all the business interactions you had last week…..are you thinking? OK, in how many of those interactions were you alone? Were there any?

The truth is so much of business is about relationships: Customer to supplier, manager to employee, co-worker to co-worker, job candidate to hiring manager etc. Really, how many times a day are you alone? Before you answer, keep in mind that your phone relationships count too.

So, we have all these interactions with… Continue

Do you know your Future

Do you know the Future?

One Saturday a couple of weeks ago, my kids and I were driving to an event where community members were being honored for years of volunteering in the community where I grew up, which is located next to the college town where I now live. My parents were some of the people honored, so it was a special time for my family.

While we were driving, out of the blue my son asked, “Mom, let’s talk about the future.” I said sure and asked him what he wanted to know. He… Continue

Selling In The Current Economy

Selling In The Current Economy

May 8, 2009 by cvitello

My guess is that the title of this blog is one of the most searched strings on Google as of late. Everyone responsible for generating revenue or increasing profits for their business is looking for the answer to this question. You will not find it here, I am sorry to say. I wanted to share with you some of my thoughts on the subject, and what I have seen recently.

There has been, without a doubt,… Continue

Are you listening?

Interviewing can be stressful for everyone. But one of the most important things to do when you are in an Interview is LISTEN. In feedback that I have been receiving from clients today is that candidates right now are not listening to the questions that are being asked. They are just diving into why they are the right fit for the job.

Make sure you listen to the questions that are being asked and answer the question is a direct way back. Too wordy of an answer or giving too many examples… Continue

Networking: Old AND New

I am a big fan and true believer in social media and Web 2.0 technology, and I feel they are excellent tools for us to leverage.

These tools have brought a new level to the way we do business and communicate with one another. They make it easier for us to e-mail our contacts or simply “shout out” a comment to someone via Facebook or Twitter. And they have created a fantastic way for me to find new candidates; candidates I would never have had access to before and can now communicate with… Continue
