I was an eligible bachelor before I discovered my current profession as a 'senior recruiter'. I was dating on and off for several years before I started my career. To be honest neither dating or recruiting was easy for me.I had to learn a lot of things to be a professional in both. I had to sell myself, mastered in storytelling, fall down, up, and again fall down, keep the partner (candidate in terms of recruiting) engaged and finally recruit a perfect life partner or a candidate.
Well, this is the first similarity. Let's see what are the other similarities between dating and recruiting.
1. Quality over quantity
I don't like to bombard or puzzle myself with a lot of resumes. I always take my time and filter the applicants in order to get the best. As a recruiter, I use recruiting tools and software to analyze applicants' quality. This is exactly how I approached my dating partner. I never said 'yes' to everyone and also didn't waste time in knowing the wrong person.
2. Beauty is not everything
When I was young, I dated a beautiful girl whom I met at a coffee shop. She was a dancer and no less than a beauty queen. But soon I realized beauty didn't fulfill the relationship I was seeking. And I broke up with her.
Similarly, a shiny and attractive piece of paper 'Resume' is like my Latin date. Never make decisions without having proper interaction and communication with the candidate. There is an old saying, 'Never judge a book by its cover', suits perfectly, right?
3. Feedback and opinions matters
When we date someone, we parade our partner to our family, friends and to someone who might offer opinions and feedback. The feedback we get and the way we use them allows us to make the right choice. Similarly, in recruiting process, feedback about the candidate is must move him/her to the next phase of recruiting process. The feedback provides the valuable insights of the candidate.
4. Communication
Good and quality communication is the base of any relationship. If it breaks, you have to search a new partner. Exactly with the recruitment. If you want to hire perfect candidates, you have to communicate with them via email, phone, text or other means. Otherwise, they will find a better opportunity.
Like finding a perfect partner is not easy similarly finding a right candidate is very difficult. Both require a lot of efforts, hard work, and patience but the rewards are very fruitful. To be a successful recruiter, always keep the points I mentioned in the article. Enjoy your date friends!
