While age is simply a number, being an older job seeker in the current job market can be a little frightening.  With advancements in technology, and the professional world constantly changing, you may find it hard to determine what employers are looking for.  Remember that with age comes experience, so to help bring those skills to a new career opportunity try the 5 tips below to get into that new career you've always wanted.

Take a Computer Class

As computers are a part of almost any type of current career, becoming proficient in a few of the most-used applications will help beef up your technology experience and let new employers know you are keeping up with the game.  You can take courses online or at your local college to receive certification.

Get on Social Networking Websites

While social networking used to mean meeting likeminded colleagues after conferences and trade events, in today's job seeking world it means linking with potential employers through online sites, such as LinkedIn.  Get a profile on these employment networking sites to help find potential leads as well as include with your application.

Freshen Up Your Resume

Resumes have taken on a completely different look than the classic resume training once taught in college.  Depending on your industry, your resume could take a traditional print format, or even take the shape as a video resume.  Pick out the standouts on your previous resume and bring them to a resume creator to work their magic.  They can make a resume that will stand out in whatever industry you are applying.

Give Your Look a Facelift

Professional dress has definitely changed to a much more casual code over the years.  Some companies require their employees to dress, what used to be business casual and some companies promote everyday comfortable clothing. Being too formal may make you stand out in a negative way.

Research business trends online and do a little recon of the employees of the companies you plan to apply for. Consider solutions such as hair restoration to give you a younger, more vibrant appearance. Approach interviews with confidence to demonstrate your competence and fit.

Learn the Industry Jargon

In the age of texting and emails, lingo is essential.  If you aren't hip to the terms and slang used in the industry you are seeking a job in, you may appear to be less hip.  Even doing a quick Google search for "_________ industry related jargon," will probably give you enough lingo to get through an interview like a pro.

While changing jobs or seeking a new career as an older job seeker can be intimidating, don't give up.  It is important to remember that companies need you as much as you want the job, so try the tips above to help your application and interview process go smoothly so you can land the job you want and deserve.
