Do you think people really DON'T KNOW (or eventually find out just by asking) what others are making? I think they do. I think money is the #1 subject of interest in many workplaces and also the one that carries the most taboo.

Following that assumption above, I understand what you're saying BUTdoesn't it behoove Mary to ask why? To challenge the status-quo? To demand she be paid an equitable sum if she believes she is not receiving a fair share? Why should Mary care about a workplace relationship that is inequitable?
