I think this is one of many forums to keep connected. I also have to be more diligent on my "functional blog", www.formerscienceguy.com. I have been negligent over there.

I have found this year in the Canadian biotech recruiting world to be more indicative than ever to either grow my own company to include staff up here or form a larger "splits" or coalition of recruiters in the US biotech industry.

Obviously, my PhD in genetics is a strong entry point and potential hook for clients to bite at, but I just don't seem to be penetrating the US market, as I get caught up with clients up here in the Great White North.

This year I have been busy up here, but with filling more junior positions. In previous years, if I had filled this many jobs by now, i'd be on the golf course and taking the summer as a commitment to improving my swing. A couple more nice deals with more senior roles being filled, I can still make a summer. I have learned to take the small with the big, the busy with the not so busy, but in the end of the day, it always seems that I bill within 10% of a nice number each year. Sure, I have had GREAT years, and good years. I thought this year was going to be my first bad year, but this quarter caught fire, and a record quarter resulted, with all my billings happening over a span of 3 weeks. Ya, three weeks. I had never seen that before, but as everyone knows, this industry is either hot or not.

So, for 8 years now, I have been doing this, on the couch, watching Phil, Oprah, CNN, etc. Sometimes even a nature show, where I can learn about the mating habits of the dung beatle.

I love my "job", and have never worked a day in my working career.

Mike, I remember when you started your business. We were eating wings at St. Louis and I remember everything we talked about. It is great to see you doing so well. I also think the 5k engagement fee you charge makes a real difference. It's smart and I think that clients who respect the work you do have no problem paying it. Maybe you can share the way you present this up fron t fee to them.
