i returned to the office after being out for two weeks due to the birth of my child and i must say times have changed. when my son was born, i didn't have access to email while out of the office. it seemed as though i spent at least a day and a half answering email and voicemails. technology has certainly made things easier for situations like this. i took only a few moments each day while out of the office to answer/forward/delete emails and voicemails. as a result, yesterday was a breeze and i was much more productive then i expected.

now the flip side is that i was taking time to respond to these messages when i could have been with my daughter. she slept most of the time anyway, so it wasn't a bother.

unfortunately, what did happen while i was gone was that hiring managers took a two week break from recruiting and didn't communicate with candidates in the pipeline. this is a dangerous thing in such competitive times for talent. the communication with candidates must be consistent through many different media (voice, email and even text) to keep them interested and engaged. this will be the first thing addressed when chatting with my hiring managers........
