Applying for jobs is a dangerous business!

Warning, contains sarcasm...

I've just been in a discussion with a couple of colleagues about how risky it is to apply for a new job. It would seem that from the moment a candidate hits "send" on their online application, they become a magnet for trouble.

Think about it. How many candidates have you have who have applied for a job who - after you clarify their interest, check they are happy with salary etc and go through any potential concerns - suddenly befall a terrible accident of fate?

How many of your candidates have:

  • Grandparents die
  • Car breakdowns
  • Train/bus problems
  • Illnesses
  • Sick children
  • Urgent hospital appointments

It truly is baffling. I wonder what is going on in the world. Why do the fates play such cruel tricks on the jobseekers of the world. If I were a cynical person, I might almost think that maybe these candidates are lying in order to not attend an interview.

These guys get off light though. What about the ones who are clearly kidnapped or abducted by aliens. You know the ones I mean, they are all keyed up for a job then they just disappear. They stop answering calls and emails and you just know something terrible must have happened.

I would like to know what the government is doing to preserve the safety of our jobseekers. It's surely important we look into this, if not for our candidates but for the grandparents of this world!

Not to mention HR Directors, MDs and other assorted Celebrities who turn up uninvited at work places at the last minute and so necessitate a last minute cancellation of planned interviews/holidays etc.

Ah yes. Another terrible affliction there Jon. It really needs some investigating. I'm considering getting the police involved...
