Be Careful What You Wish For: You Just Might Get It!

We all know what it feels like to want to change jobs: work in a job we hate, or have lost our passion for, or simply had enough of the boss!! Sometimes that ideal new job seems elusive. The search may be discouraging and you are tempted to take just any job. However taking just any role may not be the right fit for you or the employer. We at SMStheJob know how important it is to be employable in 2010, but do you know how to make sure that the potential Employer is right for you?

Seth Godin has a great blog post “Be careful of who you work for” and as he says, ‘there a plenty of books [and websites] about how to get a job, but there are no books that I know of about choosing a job’.

Here are 4 Signs to watch for in finding an undesirable employer, according to About.com:-

1. Poor Communication Skills;

When an email, phone call or written correspondence is communicated in an ineffective way by an employer – ask yourself, how well do they run their business?

2. Overselling;

If “you can not pass up this opportunity” is what the recruiter and employer is saying – ask yourself what is the sense of urgency?

3. Limited Contact Information;

There is no person or company to contact. You may not find them in a Google search – ask yourself why are there are not discoverable?

4. Jobs that sound too good to be true.

Often there are start up businesses that often promote the potential to earn over $1,000 per day - ask yourself what is the catch?

When being offered a position, make sure the opportunity is the right one for you, not all companies are “good” businesses. Do YOUR research, be prepared to ask questions at the interview. You want to know things like:

· why the last person left,

· what is the average time their employees stay for,

· how flexible they are for family responsibilities,

· what culture they promote, and

· do they value staff input

If they act unprofessional or don’t meet your personal standards, politely decline the role. We know it can be difficult to think this way, but you have the right to be choosy about where you spend 1/3 of your life!

Remember you may be qualified for more opportunities than you expect. As the saying goes “When one door closes, another will open”. Look for an employer who will match your values! And value yourself – you deserve the best!!
