Dream Team: How to Help Your Employees Work Harder and Better than Ever

Today's marketplace is far different than it was just a few short decades ago. Since the advent of the Internet, business owners are able to market their products and services on a worldwide basis. This has obviously opened up exciting opportunities, but it also brings with it a challenge. No longer are you competing with industry leaders in your geographic region. Consumers can choose among the many companies available the world over at the tips of their fingers. In order to best ensure you are able to keep up with the competition, it's important to help your employees work harder and better than ever.

Putting the Power in Their Hands

The best time to start molding an employee is when they are hired. When it comes to implementing initial training and initiation of new employees, employee onboarding software has proven to be highly effective. It allows employees to take matters into their own hands and explore materials on their own. Some of the tactics these software systems allow them to take advantage of include formal meetings, lectures, videos, and documents. This early engagement and flexibility has proven to encourage:

  • Improved job performance
  • Job satisfaction
  • Reduction in occupational stress
  • Increased organizational commitment

Lead by Example

It's all too easy for busy managers to fall into the trap of telling employees what they expect and leaving the intricacies up to them. Not only does this decrease personable encounters on the job between management and subordinates, but it also causes those in leadership positions to become unaware of potential problems.

It's encouraged for managers and other leaders not to be afraid to get their hands dirty and lead by example. A telemarketing supervisor could take calls and allow a team member to listen to exactly what they expect during a typical conversation, for example. This will bring the leaders and employees closer as workers are typically more willing to labor under someone they feel knows what they are dealing with on any given workday.

Explore Skill Sets

If you have a multi-departmental business, it's a good idea to use your regular employee assessments to find out the various skill sets your employees bring to the table. It just takes getting to know your employees a little better.

For example, if a supervisor finds that an employee working in quality control helped her previous employer solve a troublesome human resources issue, they could suggest the investment in cross-training her in the HR department. This motivates the employee while simultaneously providing the company a valuable backup.

Promote From Within

While it's always good to bring fresh faces into the mix, it can be highly disappointing for dedicated and tenured employees to be passed up for a job promotion for someone outside the company. If you've done your work right, you have already developed viable candidates from within who have a working knowledge of your company.

As human beings, it's only natural that we are ready for the next big thing. It can be highly motivational to your best employees who truly have the company's best interest at heart to know that their hard work can pay off in the long term when a new managerial position becomes available.

Staying in the Game

Although the competition is fierce, those who employ wise business tactics have more opportunity for success than ever. It requires attention to detail, time, and persistence. You're only as strong as your weakest link, and it's crucial that you set aside adequate time to ensure you properly develop and strengthen your team. By following these helpful tips, you can be on your way to creating a strong team that will lead your company to success.

So, realistically, we can't always promote from within. How do you suggest that we keep people motivated if they don't get the promotion?
