Free Messages to LinkedIn Group Members No More...

(starting Jan 13, 2014)

To clarify, my source is a phone call with a LI rep yesterday (which happened for a different reason - namely - my LIR account was charging to send InMails to group members back in November (which shouldn't have happened back then) - this is a long trace following up...it almost doesn't matter anymore but I would love the support to get better.

The rep said that:

1) InMails in LIR to group members are now becoming paid - starting Jan 13. He said that "frequent" users of those have been notified

2) He also said that free messaging on groups is going away for all. He was pretty clear on that. I would love this not to happen, of course! I am a fan and a frequent of group messaging for sourcing candidates (of course, making sure it's very targeted and personalized).

Cathy, do you have a paid Recruiter account on LinkedIN. I just saw this post. You may want to check it out. http://booleanblackbelt.com/2014/01/keep-calm-message-on-linkedin-g...

Amy - I do have a paid account (lowest tier).  If one doesn't use that, how can you tell if a 3rd party connection is a member of your group or not?  LI does not give you the capacity to expand the view.  Help?

I wish I could help Cathy, but I am not clear on the motivation behind the changes they've made. Sounds like the feature was being misused and now all recruiters are going to pay for it to me. Just an opinion.

It's odd.  If you don't have a paid account, you can send free messages, but if you do, then you cannot.  Thanks for the ear, Amy!

@ Amy: IMHO, LI's definition of "misuse":

"Misuse: anytime somebody's using a lot of what we have for free and not paying us extra for it."

No Cheers,

@Irina:  How do we identify our 2nd and 3rd level connections within groups on LI outside of LI?

@Cathy - the free sending of LI messages to group members for LI Recruiter account was possible through a BULK process....doing this through LI alone means the messages are sent ONE AT A TIME.  That's the difference.  This won't entirely remove spamming - but it goes a long way in their book.  I just finished a trial on LIR and had signed contracts to begin in February; however, am re-evaluating the deal based on their decision.  For those of us that were using this process as a targeted approach to reach talent...with customized outreach templates...it was a VERY big time saver.  No, now so much.  Not sure I need LIR now.  As I see it, the main value for LIR now is talent workflow / CRM.  However, if you have a CRM product inhouse already - one can still use the messaging features in groups...and then transfer contact information (done fairly easily today through the use of CRM plugins) to accomplish the process.  Will probably pass on my LIR contract BEFORE it starts now that they've changed the TOS.

@Brian - I think you are mistaken.  When I try to message group members to whom I am NOT a first connection, I have to use an Inmail.  LI's reply to me was "Well, you can still "message" your first level connections".  My reply:  "I don't need to be a member of the group to message first level connections".  So, all free messaging, whether one at a time, or group, is eliminated UNLESS you are first level connections.  It's horrible.  I've been on the phone with them; emailing them; they've offered free Inmails to rectify the matter and then said "No, we can't do that - but we will give you a month refund".  They are very stuck on asking the question is I have exceeded my InMail limit in the past - what difference does that make???  I would love to get your opinion.

@Keith - you can message from your free account, but, then again, if the person is not a first level connection, you have to find out the other people's last name, find the group in which they are in (that you are also in) and THEN you can message them - it takes forever.
