NYTimes article - very human:
I spoke and told everyone that our biggest expense was headcount and that we had to lay a few people off. I said that the executives were going to leave the room, call people out one by one, and help those whose jobs were being eliminated to pack. We hoped to save them from embarrassment. ~ Matt Cooper, vice president of Accolo, a recruitment outsourcing company

I was involved with two significant RIFs at a previous employer during the last downturn. In my career as a recruiter, there has been nothing more painful than having to let people go who you had responsibility for bringing into the organization.

As a recruiter, I am responsible for bring people IN to the organization. When you have worked so hard to bring good people in, to not only see them go, but to be a part of they layoff process can be an absolutely gut-wrenching situation.
