How technology changes can improve filling your vacancies

We live in the amazing age of technology! Everything is now at our finger tips - no longer do we have to rely on the library or Encyclopaedia Brittanica. The good news for job advertisers is that we can now use this technology to our advantage to ensure that more people have access to our vacancies and thereby improve our chances of finding the best applicant.
The breadth of the applicant market
We have noticed a trend with job seekers searching globally - no longer is a job the domain only of the local newspaper reach, now someone who is currently on holiday overseas can apply for a job and set up their interview for when they are back in the country! Likewise people looking to move interstate can now apply without relying on family or friends to keep them up to date with the job market. But none of this is very new - we know as advertisers that we can reach a larger audience, the important point is the varying mediums through which we can achieve this!
The technologies getting us there
Twitter: once upon a time (ok, literally a few short years ago) no one had heard of Twitter - now it is one of the goto platforms for instant information! Many job seekers are watching Twitter streams and connecting with people of influence to improve their chance at securing their dream job. Employers would do well to take advantage of this "free" source of advertising! It is as simple as setting up a profile and connecting with individuals and companies that have influence within your circle - well worth the time if you are regularly advertising!
Mobile phones: of course we love mobile phones - SMStheJOB is the only Australian job search engine to provide push technology. That is, we tap our applicants on the shoulder (via a free SMS) and say "hey look at this job, it might just be exactly what you want"! The simplicity of our process is that the job seeker need only respond with an SMS to apply for the job if they are interested! The amazing thing about this technology is how it is simplifying the job seeking process - our registered job seekers love it! If you are interested in registering, IT'S FREE,register here!
Smartphones: the internet in your pocket, always on, always accessible and private! Applicants can search safely without their current employer being wise to the sites being accessed.
ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems): and one for the advertisers/recruiters themselves. Never has it been simpler to keep a track of your job seekers, ATS's ensure that you can key and code applicants based on any number of categories (ie: qualifications, experience, personality traits, location, pay base and the categories can go on!). This process is also something that can be utilised by employers without the fancy software. Simply keep a record of all of your applicants in an excel spreadsheet! Choose your selection criteria and ensure that you measure each applicant and assign a value - this can make the hiring process much easier, especially if you have a large number of applicants to sort!
Yes - the technologies available to us mean that now, more than ever we are best placed to reach a wide number of applicants and better able to sort those applicants by our selection criteria!! We'd love to know what technologies or systems you currently use or are considering - drop us a comment below!
