Want to change industries? Here's a tip that might help you land your dream job: think Hospitality!

Typical Hospitality roles

The Hospitality Industry is made up of many and varied jobs and positions. The most commonly thought of positions in Hospitality are those found in Restaurants and Cafés: Wait Staff, Bar Person, Chef, Cook, Kitchen hand, Barista.

More varied Hospitality roles

But there are also varied positions in places such as Hotels including jobs as a Cleaner, Concierge, Front of House Supervisor, Guest Services and various Management Positions. One of the beauties of the Hospitality Industry is that there are roles available for people of all educational backgrounds, with entry level roles often requiring no experience, through to Senior Management positions where tertiary qualifications may be required.

Hospitality is stable

No matter what the state of the economy the Hospitality Industry is always busy and thriving, the busier we get the more we eat out; eating is the great social past time - meaning that there are always opportunities in Hospitality!

Like People? Prefer different hours? Just add food and beverage!

Most people who end up working in the Hospitality Industry choose to do so because they genuinely enjoy dealing with people. Many also choose a job in Hospitality because the nature of the work and the hours allow them time to complete their studies during 'normal business hours' or work around a partners job if you have a young family. If you are looking for a job working ‘normal’ business hours, then the Hospitality Industry may not be for you! Yes there are some Hospitality jobs during ‘normal’ business hours, but there are many more available outside of these hours.

What skills should you have?

As mentioned above - liking people is a big must for hospitality! But some other skills that will help you land a role are: Maths - yes, can you quickly add up a bill? work out change? help a table split their bill? Most Wait Staff and Bar Tenders are inherently good at Maths. How about being able to react quickly, there is a big advantage in being able to think quickly on your feet when you are dealing with different personalities and moods, if you can sooth an upset customer and keep clients happy, hospitality would be a great career move! You should also be able to stay focussed despite the many distractions of a busy bar or restaurant! Don't forget that there are a number of Certificates or Diplomas you could also obtain to assist you and if you are serving alcohol you will need an RSA (Responsible Serving of Alcohol) certificate.
