What I'm noticing about people and the dumbing-down thing is that we respond to the affordances of technology. If you send me a letter, my expectation is that I should answer within two to three weeks. If you send me a fax, I have the expectation that within two days I should be getting back to you. If you send me an email, I think I have 10 hours. If you send me a text, you are probably very annoyed if I don't respond within an hour and really you're hoping for an instantaneous reply.
More and more, business is being conducted in a way where people are expected to give answers in 10 minutes when, in some cases, two weeks would be better. We get into the habit of asking and answering questions, setting and solving problems that we know we can answer quickly. I think you see this in the financial meltdown. These are very hard questions and you see all this revision of [the decisions]. It's maybe not something that should be answered within 24 hours.
