Imposter Syndrome and How to Overcome it

If you’ve thought about starting your own Recruitment Business, but have felt held back by thinking that you’re not really good enough, you could be suffering from Imposter Syndrome. This type of condition is described as a psychological pattern, where an individual doubts their own achievements and accomplishments.

We’ve all had cause for self-doubt at some stage, but this is a natural and healthy thinking mechanism, which allows us to measure our progress, and continue to learn and develop. For some people though, this self-doubt can have a negative impact on their lives, and hold them back from achieving great things, in both their career and personal life.

This type of thinking can create a ‘fear’ of being found out as a fraud, as they believe they aren’t really any good at the things they’ve actually already been doing. This type of thinking can kick in when we look to challenge ourselves and step outside of our everyday comfort zone. It can hold you back, but there are ways to overcome this sense of self-doubt and pattern of critical thinking.

How to Overcome Imposter Syndrome

  1. Separate Fact from Fiction

Don’t look at what you think you’ve achieved, look at what you’ve actually achieved! Metrics, referrals and even the fact you’ve got continuing client and candidate relationships, demonstrate you do know what you're doing in your given sector.

  1. Write Your Own Rules

No one said you have to make a placement every Monday.  It’s down to you to work out how your business is run, and up to you to decide when you work, and how you want to work.

  1. Recognise Failure When You See it

If you have a specific type of role you’re struggling with, evaluate the candidate market, but also evaluate whether you have the recruiting skills needed to make that type of placement. It may be a good time to review your business development strategies and reassess what is, and isn’t working for you.

  1. Visualise Success

Take the time to understand what you want to achieve from running your own business. Are you looking for financial freedom and flexible working hours? Are you looking to be your own boss for a number of years, or do you want to build an empire and change your lifestyle completely?

  1. Reward Yourself

Recognising your tangible achievements, and celebrating them, will help you to stop the negativity creeping in. You did achieve that, you are more than good enough, and you can do this!
