The Wall Street Journal ran an article last week citing an Accenture study that found 46% of middle managers in the US felt changing jobs in the current economy was 'risky'. That's consistent with what we are seeing in the market and it makes me worry--not for our business but for those folks who have lulled themselves into a false sense of security.
Take Sun Micro for example. Big beautiful buildings, 30 some thousand employees. Feels pretty secure. Except that their market cap is just about equal to their cash position.
The old adage is true--the best time to find a job is when you have a job. Far too many people we've called this year have said 'thanks but no thanks' to even listening about a new role only to be calling back in a couple of months wondering if the role is still open (it never is). So when opportunity knocks, take a hard look at that new role in a different company. And always, always make networking a priority.
