Let’s be honest finding great candidates can be tough at times and smaller companies can struggle to gain the traction required.

You can convince yourself that candidates are not readily applying because they are unaware of the brand, your office is in the wrong location or your skill requirements are too niche. However, it is more likely to be your job advert.

Job adverts are not something that should be thrown together in 5 minutes by your HR Assistant, but instead are finely constructed introductions to you and your company mission.

Follow these top tips, you can be sure your ads will start to draw in the high quality candidates you desire:

Go back to basics

Before writing your advert answer the questions below so you have a clear understanding of the vacancy.

Why is this position needed?

What is this person actually going to be doing?

What skills does the person need?

Focus on the problem

There is usually a problem that creates the need for a new hire. Focus on the problem and how you would like the candidate to solve it for you and therein lays the mission. This will also give you a great insight into the kind of person you want to attract.

Get a novice to read your advert

Find someone that knows nothing about the vacancy and ask them to read it. After ask them what type of role and person do they feel the advert is describing. If they are describing the same type of person that you were imagining you are on the right lines.

Choose your platform

Make sure you are advertising in the right areas. Research where the types of people you are after spend their time job hunting. Are they on LinkedIn, is there a popular specialist job board, do they all belong to a specific forum?

Bring in the Xperts

If you are still having problems finding the right candidates work with a recruitment consultant. Find a consultant who understands your industry, the vacancy and skill set required. A good recruitment consultant will be able to tweak your advert so that the top quality candidates are interested by your opportunity. And remember to give them a full brief on your mission, often the stuff left off the spec is the hook that is required to land your silver bullet candidate.
