Job Adverts: the good, the bad and the ugly!

On a daily basis whilst posting my client’s vacancies onto the job boards it amazes me how poor the vast majority of the adverts are on major UK job boards. Poor grammar, spelling mistakes, little detail and no call to action are just a few of the issues I see daily.

I am shocked that major UK businesses are trusting agencies with their vacancies to be represented in such a shoddy fashion. Rant over!

Advertising your vacancies is the first point of call in any recruitment process and in many ways the easiest, so there’s really no excuse to get it wrong.

I think it’s worth revising what purpose a job advert has, to let people know you have a vacancy, to sell the job to prospective talent, to screen out unsuitable candidates. Let’s not forget a job advert is in no way a job specification/description – they are entirely different!

Here at Clever Recruit we post our clients vacancies using our flat fee service and our main aims are to promote the advert as much as possible and ensure it is presented in the right way to the right talent. We endeavour to provide industry leading flat fee recruitmentthrough a keen eye for detail, thorough use of our in house copywriting team and detailed requirements from our clients which all contributes to a highly effective, professional and successful flat fee recruitment service.

Here are my basic suggestions for an effective job advert:

  • Ensure your job title is correct. Many companies use different job titles for the same role and these may not be commonly used elsewhere.
  • Always provide information about your company but keep it short and relevant.
  • Open with a description about the role and a short paragraph of what it involves. (This allows a candidate to visualise themselves in the role).
  •  Only list the main responsibilities of the vacancy, don’t bore anyone with too much detail. It should be enough for candidate to gage if they are suitable or not.
  • Wherever possible include salary – this is a big enticing factor.

At Clever Recruit we can help any recruitment needs with our online flat fee recruitment services.
