You want to find a new role, a job you can really get excited about. Think beyond the jobs you see and hear about. Make it your temporary job to seek out your dream job. How?

One way is by knowing and seeking to find elearning/learning work within your area of passion/personal interests. You know, what you want to do when you retire. Research the possibilities of combining that with your current professional career. Example – if you are a learning professional, and love anything from Physical fitness, Spelunking, Underwater Photography, Long Distance Cycling, Hang Gliding, Recreational Piloting, Ice Biking, Horseback riding, Gardening, Travel, Languages, Opera, Jazz, Theater, Chess, Game Fishing, Fly Fishing you name it, try to combine it with learning.

• Seek out the associations for your hobby. (All those I listed above have at least one.)
• Identify companies, possible employers in that sector. (They will be a member of the associations. Or advertise on their sites.)
• Become aware of your area of interest’s certifications, Continuing Education, Licensure which will lead you to Learning Vendors offering classes online or in person. They need competent learning professionals and executives.
• Contribute to specialty magazine, blog, association web site, and make new contacts.
• Post resume on the Niche Career Sites of the magazines and associations.
• Comb their job postings.
• Feel confident that you Add Value with your passion and knowledge.
• Contact via email or snail mail the decisionmakers in those companies and elearning vendors directly with a personal note, and then phone and then offer to take them to lunch (if local).
• Attend the National and/or Regional Convention of your interest area and network.
• Google to locate Recruiters who specialize in this area of expertise.


Enjoy! The thought of sending out letters and resumes is about as attractive as sleeping on needles for many people. Think of how much more exhilarating it would be if you chased your dream job this way.
