Road Warrior: How to Become a Trucker in No Time Flat

Becoming a professional truck driver is a great option for individuals just getting into the workforce as well as for those who are nearing middle age. In fact, many people these days are pursuing this as a second career. Trucking is a well-loved career path because many truckers can choose their routes and their hours. Plus, the pay is often quite competitive. If you are interested in becoming a professional trucker yourself, follow these four simple steps to get on the road in no time at all.

Complete Professional Training

The road to becoming a trucker begins with training. Of course, you must have your regular driver’s license first. Many schools offer professional training that lasts less than a year. Plus, if you are already interested in a particular trucking company, you may be able to find training with them for a low cost or for an off-set fee.

Pass Licensing Examinations

You will want to be sure that your training is right for the type of trucking that you wish to do. Passing the examination to become a CDL truck driver is the first basic step to take. However, you may also want to look into other certifications, registrations, and endorsements. By getting a combination vehicle endorsement, you will be able to get future certifications to carry hazardous materials, drive a school bus, or drive a tanker.

Find the Right Job

Once you have the certifications that you need, you can start looking for your desired job. Some trucking schools offer job placement assistance. Career counseling is a good option if you are unsure of what type of trucking you want to do. Other options including looking on national job boards for openings or hiring a recruiter to find you the perfect job.

Complete Orientation

The federal government requires that you complete an in-house orientation and training program in most cases if you are a new trucker. Most of these programs last one month or less. You will get used to working with the vehicles and will learn all about the company for which you are now working. Instead of looking at this extra training as a waste of time, consider it to be an opportunity to get used to your new job. Plus, you should get paid during this orientation period.

Trucking is an amazing job for individuals who love to be out on the road and who enjoy seeing new sights. Pay is great especially for those who haul hazardous materials or who have special certifications. Consider following this simple four-step process to become a road warrior yourself in no time flat.
